In “The Glorious Quran: ‘Humanity Came from a Single Soul’” he argues the “single soul” (6:98; 4:1) may denote the first unicellular organism rather than a literal Adam, and advances his own (idiosyncratic and contested) grammatical claim that the “single soul” is feminine — i.e., that the male mate emerged “from her,” not Eve from Adam’s rib. His post “The Quran and Biological Evolution: Towards a Theistic Evolutionary Model” states the theological payoff plainly: “There is no concept of ‘original sin’ in Islam hinging on a single couple’s direct formation and fall,” so evolution “did not, in principle, pose the same threat” to Islam that it did to some Christian readings, and the Quran records that Adam and Eve “did err, but they repented and God mercifully forgave them (2:37, 7:23). There was no ‘Fall’ that permanently corrupted humankind’s nature.”

Big Bang, fine-tuning, and the Penrose number

Shah repeatedly deploys cosmic fine-tuning as natural theology. In “The Architecture of Cosmic Origins: Entropy, the Penrose Number, and the Teleological Implications of Fine-Tuning” (Sept 13, 2026), he presents Roger Penrose’s estimate that the probability of the universe’s initial low-entropy state arising by chance is about 1 in 10^(10^123). The figure is Penrose’s own: in The Emperor’s New Mind (1989, p. 343) Penrose wrote that “in order to produce a universe resembling the one in which we live, the Creator would have to aim for an absurdly tiny volume of the phase space of possible universes — about 1/10^(10^123) of the entire volume.” Shah calls this “an extraordinary degree of cosmic fine-tuning” and marshals it — via Bayesian confirmation theory and Robin Collins’s work — as “a robust teleological argument against atheistic naturalism.” (It is worth noting that Penrose himself drew no theistic conclusion, and physicists debate whether the low-entropy initial state should count as “fine-tuning” at all.) Related posts (“Not in Play, But in Truth,” on Q 44:38–39; “Robert Spitzer and Mystery of Existence”) argue that “the universe is intelligible because it was authored by an Intelligence,” noting the Quran’s use of taqdir (measure/determination) for the laws of nature.

BioLogos vs. Intelligent Design — a Muslim adjudication

In a pair of September 17, 2026 essays (“Two Ways of Seeing the Same Cosmos” and “Two Visions of the Cosmos”), Shah adjudicates the intra-Christian debate as a sympathetic outsider. He judges Intelligent Design to be “good philosophy but bad science” — even “bad theology” insofar as it courts the god-of-the-gaps error that Michael Heller called “a grave theological error” — because it presents metaphysical claims “not as philosophy or theology, but as science” and violates methodological naturalism. He judges BioLogos (Francis Collins) to offer “the more scientifically defensible and theologically robust framework,” Thequran since it “upholds evolutionary theory as God’s chosen mechanism.” From ID he nonetheless “extracts the profound metaphysical truth that the universe is unequivocally designed,” Thequran arguing that Islamic theology — especially Ghazalian occasionalism — can “bridge the epistemological divide.”

His self-aware concordism

Notably, Shah identifies as a “Bucailleist in the tradition of Maurice Bucaille” thequran while openly acknowledging the critiques of Bucailleism by Ziauddin Sardar, Pervez Hoodbhoy, and Taner Edis “as concordism that strains verses to match shifting science.” His stated discipline is to distinguish “(a) what the Quran says, (b) what physics establishes provisionally, and (c) what is analogy or theological inference,” conceding that some of his identifications are “analogy — illuminating, defensible, but not demonstrative.” Thequran This candor is itself an invitation to the same honest, self-critical harmonization that the best Christian scholars practice.


Part IV: A Fair Note on the Critics — So Readers May Weigh the Case

Intellectual honesty requires registering the serious objections, from Muslims and non-Muslims alike, to “scientific miracle” (i’jaz ʿilmi) readings of the Quran — the same kind of self-critique that keeps Christian harmonization honest.

  • Muslim critics. Nidhal Guessoum’s Islam’s Quantum Question is, in significant part, a “detailed refutation of various pseudo-scientific defenses of Islam and the Quran,” targeting i’jaz popularizers (such as Zaghloul El-Naggar) for using “the flimsiest of evidence.” Hawramani Encyclopedia of Muslim Baby Names Guessoum, along with Ziauddin Sardar, Pervez Hoodbhoy, and (from a secular standpoint) Taner Edis, argues that concordism ties eternal scripture to provisional and shifting science, risks embarrassment when theories change, and mistakes evocative language for technical prediction. Guessoum’s constructive alternative is to see the Quran as grounding the rationality and intelligibility of nature rather than encoding specific scientific facts.
  • The Keith Moore episode. The embryology claims popularized by Bucaille and others were amplified by a Saudi-backed commission that, according to Daniel Golden’s Wall Street Journal investigation “Western Scholars Play Key Role in Touting ‘Science’ of the Quran” (Jan. 23, 2002), recruited Western scientists — attracted with “first-class plane tickets… $1,000 honoraria, and banquets with Muslim leaders” — to endorse Quranic science claims. Several later expressed misgivings: the marine scientist William W. Hay called it “a trap,” the embryologist Gerald Goeringer called it “mutual manipulation,” and the anatomist Keith Moore, whose embryology endorsement became the most famous, declined comment, saying “It’s been ten or eleven years since I was involved in the Quran.” Readers should treat the strongest “miracle” claims with corresponding caution.
  • Christian and secular responses. Christian apologists respond that some Quranic cosmological verses can equally be read as reflecting 7th-century cosmology (e.g., debates over whether the Quranic heavens are “flat” or whether 21:30 and 41:11 are mutually consistent), and secular scholars note that vague or metaphorical language can be retrofitted to many theories. These are precisely the mirror-images of the critiques leveled at Christian concordism, and they deserve a fair hearing.

The honest conclusion is that neither the Christian nor the Muslim harmonization succeeds by claiming that its scripture is a science textbook. Both succeed, if at all, by showing that their scripture’s theological vision is coherent with — and arguably enriched by — what science reveals, while refusing to freeze either book into a single brittle reading.


Epilogue: The Unity of Truth and the Kinship of the Book

Two convictions run through this entire story like a golden thread. The first is the unity of truth: if one God authored both the book of Scripture and the book of nature, then honest reading of the one and honest study of the other must finally converge. John Paul II put it as “truth cannot contradict truth”; Lennox as the “ultimate harmony” of Word and world; the Quran as the summons to “reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth.” Christians and Muslims stand here on common ground.

The second is humility. Augustine warned sixteen centuries ago against making Scripture assert what nature refutes; Walton reminds us that ancient texts answer ancient questions; Lamoureux distinguishes the message from its vessel; Guessoum warns against forcing verses onto shifting science. The lesson, across both traditions, is that the fault, when science and scripture seem to clash, has usually lain not in God’s two books but in our hasty reading of them.

To our Christian brothers and sisters who have given their lives to reconciling Genesis with the cosmos: your effort is honorable, and the Quran honors it, naming those “who say, ‘We are Christians,’” as “nearest in love” to the believers (5:82), affirming the Torah and the Gospel and the prophethood of Jesus, son of Mary. The invitation here is not to abandon your reverence for Scripture but to widen the horizon — to let the same generosity you extend to Genesis be extended to a scripture that many find remarkably unencumbered by a solid dome, a light-before-sun sequence, or an inherited guilt, and that calls the study of the stars an act of worship. As the Islamic golden age testified and as Dr. Zia Shah’s blog argues in the 21st century, the deepest reward of harmonizing theology and science may be this: not a smaller God defended in the gaps, but a greater One glorified in the whole — the Lord of the worlds, who breathed fire into the equations and set every sun swimming in its orbit. In that broadening of horizons lies a richer unification of science and faith, and in the Abrahamic kinship of Jew, Christian, and Muslim, a shared table at which to pursue it.
