Introduction: A Surah of the Kneeling

Sūrat al-Jāthiyah is the forty-fifth chapter of the Qur’an, a Meccan revelation belonging to the seven Ḥā Mīm surahs whose hallmark is the interlacing of three themes: the descent of the Book, the signs (āyāt) of God strewn through the natural world, and rational argument for monotheism and resurrection. Verse 45:24 — “Nothing destroys us but time”

Translation (Abdel Haleem): “They say, ‘There is only our life in this world: we die, we live, nothing but time (al-dahr) destroys us.’ But they have no knowledge of this; they only follow conjecture.”

The materialist creed

This verse is the Qur’an’s most precise portrait of ancient materialism. Ibn Kathīr identifies the speakers as the Dahriyya — the “eternalists” or “time-ists” — together with the Arab idolaters who adopted their denial of resurrection, and “the atheist philosophers among them who denied the creation and Resurrection.” Their doctrine has three moving parts: (1) an ontological claim, that reality is exhausted by “our worldly life”; (2) a causal claim, that death is nothing but the wearing-down of bodies by al-dahr, the impersonal passage of time; and (3) an epistemic posture, which the Qur’an immediately turns against them — in hum illā yaẓunnūn, “they merely conjecture.” The word ẓann (conjecture, surmise) becomes the leitmotif of the passage: the materialists, who pride themselves on hard-headed empiricism, are shown to hold their central metaphysical thesis on no evidence at all. No one has surveyed the far side of the grave and returned to report annihilation; the denial of the hereafter is itself an unfalsified faith.

Al-dahr, the hadith “I am Time,” and the block universe

The word al-dahr carries extraordinary theological weight because of a ḥadīth qudsī recorded in both canonical collections: “Allah said: ‘The son of Adam injures Me; he curses time (al-dahr), and I am Time — in My hand is the affair, I alternate its night and its day’” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4826; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2246). The classical harmonization of this hadith with 45:24 is decisive for the Four Books reading. Ibn Kathīr transmits the explanation of al-Shāfiʿī and Abū ʿUbayda: in the Jāhiliyya, when calamity struck, the Arabs would cry “O the disappointment of Time!” and heap blame on al-dahr — “attributing those acts to time and cursing it, whereas the true Doer of them is God. So it was as if they cursed God Himself, since He is the real Doer.” Time is not an autonomous destroyer; it is the name the faithless give to the agency they refuse to attribute to God. The scholars are emphatic — and this is the crucial doctrinal guardrail — that al-Dahr is not a name of God. Ibn Kathīr notes that Ibn Ḥazm erred gravely in listing “al-Dahr” among the divine names, and later scholars refuted him with the very verse under discussion: were “al-Dahr” truly a name of God, then the deniers who said “nothing destroys us but al-dahr” would have been correct, which is absurd. The Prophetic clarifier — “in My hand is the affair, I alternate its night and day” — itself proves the point: a thing God “turns about” is His creature, not His essence.

Here the Four Books thesis makes contact with modern physics in a way that is genuinely illuminating rather than merely rhetorical. The Dahriyya worldview treated time as the fundamental destroyer — a one-way thermodynamic arrow along which everything decays and is erased. But modern physics has a rival picture of time itself: the block universe or eternalism that follows naturally from special relativity. Because the relativity of simultaneity denies any universe-wide, objective “now” (the Rietdijk–Putnam argument of 1966–67), the most natural ontology drawn from relativity is that past, present, and future are all equally real — spacetime is a four-dimensional “block” in which every event, including every human deed, has a permanent location. On this reading, the materialist intuition that time annihilates is precisely backwards: relativistic spacetime does not delete the past; it archives it. The moment of a good deed is not less real for being “past” — it is a fixed feature of the manifold. The Qur’anic riposte to al-dahr, in Shah’s framing, is that time is “not a passive agent of destruction, but an active dimension of information storage.” The hadith “I am Time” then reads, in the block-universe light, as the assertion that the four-dimensional whole and its unfolding belong to God, who is not in time but its author. (One must be careful: eternalism is an interpretation of relativity, not a theorem of it, and it is contested; presentists read the same equations differently. This is an evocative resonance, not a proof.)


Verse 45:25 — “Bring back our forefathers”

The fallacy of on-demand verification

The deniers, confronted with the “clear signs,” produce not a counter-argument but a taunt disguised as one: resurrect our dead ancestors here and now, on demand, or your claim fails. Ibn Kathīr glosses this as the demand for a private demonstration when “the truth is made plain to them” that God can raise decayed bodies. The Qur’an treats the demand as a category error. Resurrection is not a laboratory trick performed at skeptics’ whim; it is a universal, once-for-all gathering appointed by the Creator. To demand a local, repeatable proof of a global, unrepeatable event is to misunderstand the claim — rather as demanding to “see” the Big Bang re-run in a test tube misunderstands cosmology.

The Four Books reading reframes the demand through the logic of the first creation. The materialist assumes that reconstituting a person from scattered dust is impossible; the Qur’an answers repeatedly that the One who originated a human being from a single drop can restore him (cf. 36:78–79; 75:3–4). Shah presses this in an informational key: the entire specification for a human body is already compressed into a microscopic instruction set (DNA). If a whole person can be “rendered” once from an all-but-invisible seed, the re-rendering of that person from a conserved record is not metaphysically extravagant but computationally natural. The taunt “bring back our forefathers” thus rests, like the creed of verse 24, on ẓann — on the unexamined assumption that death is deletion. The rest of the passage systematically denies exactly that assumption.


Verse 45:26 — “God gives life, causes death, and gathers”

Three sovereign acts against al-dahr

Verse 26 is the direct answer to verse 24. Where the Dahriyya named one impersonal agent (time) and one event (death), the Qur’an names one personal Agent (God) and three deliberate acts: yuḥyīkum (He gives you life), yumītukum (He causes you to die), yajmaʿukum (He gathers you). Death is transferred from the ledger of blind entropy to the ledger of divine will — it is not a mechanical failure but a “willed event,” in the language of Shah’s commentary on 45:21–26. And a fourth term is added that the materialist worldview structurally lacks: al-jamʿ, the gathering — a future retrieval. The verse closes on the epistemic note that binds the whole passage: lā rayba fīh (“no doubt about it”) set against akthara’n-nāsi lā yaʿlamūn (“most people do not know”) — certainty on God’s side, ignorance masquerading as knowledge on theirs.

Occasionalism and the Book of Nature

This is where the second of the four books — the Book of Nature — enters. In Shah’s framework, following al-Ghazālī’s occasionalism, the “laws of nature” are not autonomous, self-executing powers but God’s ʿāda, His customary habit: the continuous, moment-by-moment re-creation of the cosmos. Al-Ghazālī’s celebrated argument in the Seventeenth Discussion of the Tahāfut al-Falāsifa — that fire does not cause cotton to burn, since observation establishes only concomitance, not necessary connection, and that “the one who enacts the burning… is God, either through the mediation of His angels or without mediation” — anticipated Hume’s analysis of causation as constant conjunction by six centuries. The theological payoff for verse 26 is direct: if God is the immediate sustainer of every event, then giving life and taking it are not interventions in an otherwise self-running machine but the ordinary texture of a continuously authored world. The Qur’anic proof-texts Shah marshals — 2:255 (Ayat al-Kursī: “His preservation of them tires Him not”), 35:41 (“God holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease”), 55:29 (“every day He is engaged in an affair”) — portray a cosmos held in being from instant to instant. Modern quantum mechanics, on this reading, removes the Newtonian embarrassment that once made occasionalism look archaic: the probabilistic, non-deterministic character of wave-function collapse leaves conceptual room for a “collapser,” and the 2022 Nobel-honored confirmation of quantum non-locality (Aspect, Clauser, Zeilinger) shows a cosmos whose parts are informationally bound in ways classical physics denied. One should note Shah’s own caution: quantum mechanics does not prove occasionalism; it makes it conceivable again.


Verse 45:27 — “To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth”

Sovereignty, the Hour, and the losers of falsehood

The verse yokes two ideas: God’s total ownership (mulk) of the cosmos, and the coming of the Hour (al-sāʿah) on which “the falsifiers” (al-mubṭilūn) will be the losers. Mubṭil is the active participle from bāṭil — the false, the vain, the null. Muhammad Asad renders it as those who “tried to reduce to nothing whatever they could not understand” — a precise inversion: the Dahriyya believed the universe would reduce them to nothing (verse 24), but on the Hour it is their falsehood, not their persons, that is annulled. The claim of ownership is the metaphysical ground for the reckoning to come: because the heavens and the earth are God’s, the record of what transpires within them is His to keep and His to read back.

The universe as an owned, engineered, purposeful system

The Four Books reading connects mulk to the immediately preceding argument of the surah (45:22): “God created the heavens and the earth bil-ḥaqq” — in truth, with purpose, not as sport. Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī argued that a created world in which the pious and the wicked meet identical ends is reduced to meaninglessness; the “truth” of the physical order must be mirrored by a “truth” in the moral order. This is the backbone of what Shah calls the ontological necessity of the hereafter: the same fine-tuned, law-governed, purposeful cosmos that makes physical life possible demands a moral symmetry that biological life conspicuously fails to deliver — tyrants die in comfort, martyrs in agony. Sovereignty over “the heavens and the earth” thus entails not only the power to create but the obligation, rooted in ḥaqq, to reconcile the moral books. The surah’s very structure — signs of the cosmos, then the moral argument, then the record — is the argument from Nature to Judgment.


Verse 45:28 — “Every community kneeling, called to its book”

The kneeling and the communal ledger

This is the verse that names the surah. Every ummah — every nation, community, or moral collective — is seen jāthiyah, on its knees, in a posture the commentators read as one of fear, humility, and the exhaustion of all pretension. Each is “called to its book” (kitābihā). Shah’s commentary makes much of a grammatical detail: the possessive suffix here is -hā, “its” (feminine singular), binding the record to the ummah as a collective. This first invocation of “the book” is thus the communal or horizontal ledger — the record of a civilization’s shared moral trajectory. Human beings do not act in a vacuum; their choices are shaped by, and reshape, the institutions, laws, and cultures of their communities. The “book of the nation” evaluates moral agency as it is embedded in social systems — how collective structures fostered righteousness or entrenched systemic injustice. The classical exegetes (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr) read this collective summoning in terms of shared destiny and corporate responsibility.

The phrase al-yawma tujzawna mā kuntum taʿmalūn — “today you are recompensed for what you used to do” — introduces the principle of exact requital that verse 29 will ground in a recording mechanism. The verb tujzawna (you are repaid) presupposes a complete and accurate account; there can be no just recompense without a faithful record. This is the narrative pivot from moral principle to informational infrastructure.


Verse 45:29 — “This Our Book speaks with truth; We were transcribing”

This is the theological and scientific climax of the passage — the verse Shah names as a primary anchor of the Book of Deeds — and it rewards close reading in three registers: the shift of ownership, the philology of nastansikhu, and the “speaking” of the book.

From “its book” to “Our Book”: the divine-objective database

Where verse 28 said kitābihā (“its book,” the community’s), verse 29 shifts to kitābunā (“Our Book,” God’s). Shah reads this transition as the movement from the localized, contextual, communal record to the absolute, objective, divine database — a record independent of human bias, owned and authored by God Himself. The two are not contradictory but complementary: the subjective moral narrative of a people, and the objective informational substrate against which it is measured. In the language of the classical two-record theology (below), the daily record of deeds is collated against a master register — and here God speaks in the first person plural as its owner.

The philology of nastansikhu: copying from an original

The pivotal word is nastansikhu, a Form X (istifʿāl) derivation of the root n-s-kh. In classical Arabic lexicography naskh means transcription, copying, transferring an original into another medium. The Form X istinsākh carries a specific and, for the Four Books thesis, decisive implication: it is copying from a pre-existing original (aṣl). The engine of the classical interpretation is a dictum recorded by al-Ṭabarī on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who, addressing an Arab audience, asks: “wa hal yakūnu’l-istinsākhu illā min aṣl?” — “And does transcription ever occur except from an original (aṣl)?” Al-Baghawī states the principle flatly: “istinsākh only occurs from an original, so a book is copied from a book.” Al-Wāḥidī reports that “most exegetes” held that this transcription is from al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ. And al-Rāzī, in his Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb, uses this very verse to argue (against a purely juridical sense of naskh) that the word is literally about al-naql wa’l-taḥwīl, transferring and copying.

The classical tradition preserves two principal readings, both of which the Four Books thesis can accommodate. This is a stunning structure. The Qur’an describes a redundant, error-checked recording architecture: a real-time transcription (the daily deeds) verified against a master copy (the Preserved Tablet), with a guaranteed zero-error reconciliation. Maududi already observed that nastansikhu suggests a recording mechanism faintly analogous to modern information technology. The Four Books thesis presses the analogy to its natural terminus.

“The book speaks”: yanṭiqu bi’l-ḥaqq

Before the science, the philology of yanṭiqu (“speaks”) must be handled honestly, because the classical exegetes are unanimous that it is figurative. Al-Qurṭubī is explicit: “‘it speaks against you with truth’ means it testifies; this is a metaphor (istiʿāra)… it is as if it speaks against them” — and he cross-references 18:49 (“Woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?”) and 23:62 (wa ladaynā kitābun yanṭiqu bi’l-ḥaqq, “with Us is a Book that speaks the truth”). Al-Baghawī: “it testifies against you with a clarifying exposition, as if it speaks.” The “speech” of the book is its exhaustive, self-evident, truthful disclosure — the record so complete that it needs no external witness. This matters for the modern reading: the Four Books thesis is not claiming that the classical scholars anticipated hard drives; it is claiming that the function they described — a complete, truthful, self-presenting, error-free record of every deed — is exactly the function that information-theoretic physics now says the universe actually performs.

The Book of Deeds and the physics of information conservation

The universe is, in the strict physical sense, an un-erasable ledger. It is difficult to find a closer natural analogue to innā kunnā nastansikhu — “We were transcribing” — than a cosmos in which no quantum bit can ever be deleted.

3. Landauer’s principle: information is physical. Rolf Landauer’s 1961 result (“Irreversibility and heat generation in the computing process,” IBM Journal of Research and Development 5, 183–191) establishes that erasing one bit of information must dissipate at least k_B T ln 2 of heat into the environment. Information is not an abstraction hovering above matter; it is a physical quantity with an energetic price for its destruction. A universe in which erasure is thermodynamically expensive is a universe biased toward retention — which is, in Shah’s framing, exactly the physical precondition for a promise of loss-free justice.

4. The holographic principle: where the record is stored. Bekenstein’s 1970s discovery that black-hole entropy scales with horizon area rather than volume, generalized by ‘t Hooft (1993) and Susskind (“The World as a Hologram,” 1995) and given concrete form by Maldacena’s 1997 AdS/CFT correspondence, implies that the entire information content of a three-dimensional region can be encoded on its two-dimensional boundary. Jacob D. Bekenstein made the point vividly in “Information in the Holographic Universe” (Scientific American 289, no. 2, August 2003, pp. 58–65): “Ask anybody what the physical world is made of, and you are likely to be told ‘matter and energy.’ Yet if we have learned anything from engineering, biology and physics, information is just as crucial an ingredient” — closing with the hope that “the vision of information as the stuff the world is made of will have found a worthy embodiment.” Shah reads the event horizon as “a cosmic archive at the boundary of the unseen,” and the cosmological boundary as a candidate physical substrate for al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ — the “cosmic memory surface” onto which every event is projected. A deep confirmation came with the 2015 result of Almheiri, Dong, and Harlow (“Bulk locality and quantum error correction in AdS/CFT,” JHEP 04:163) that the AdS/CFT map has the mathematical structure of a quantum error-correcting code: bulk physics can be reconstructed from boundary data even if part of that data is lost. A cosmos built like an error-correcting code is a cosmos engineered against information loss — a striking structural echo of the classical two-record theology in which the daily ledger is reconciled, letter for letter, against the Preserved Tablet.

5. The black-hole information paradox and its resolution. Hawking’s 1974 calculation suggested that evaporating black holes destroy information, violating unitarity. The tension was resolved in the holographic direction: information is encoded on the horizon and re-emerges, scrambled but intact, in Hawking radiation. The 2019–2020 “Page curve” calculations (Penington; Almheiri, Engelhardt, Marolf, Maxfield; and the replica-wormhole computations of Almheiri–Hartman–Maldacena–Shaghoulian–Tajdini and Penington–Shenker–Stanford–Yang) showed that the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation follows the unitary Page curve — information comes back out. Hawking himself conceded the point in 2004. Even the most voracious object in the cosmos, it turns out, cannot delete the record.

Shah calls the synthesis of these results the Holographic Eschaton: resurrection modeled not as creation ex nihilo but as data retrieval and rendering — the reconstitution of a person from a physically conserved informational template. The theological register must be kept clear: this is an analogy for conceivability, not a mechanism the Qur’an teaches. But it is a powerful one. Where the Dahriyya said time deletes, physics says the universe cannot delete; where verse 29 says “We were transcribing,” physics finds a cosmos that transcribes into its own entanglement structure and cannot erase what it has written.

Decoherence as the “recording angel”

Shah offers a specific physical model for the act of recording. When a conscious agent exercises a choice — utters a word, moves a limb, fires a pattern of synapses — the associated quantum states are not isolated; they interact with, and become entangled with, a vast environment of photons, air molecules, and thermal radiation. This is quantum decoherence: the process by which a superposition of possibilities is “collapsed” into a single classical outcome, and that outcome is thereby copied into innumerable correlations across the environment — permanently written into the fabric of spacetime. On this reading, the Kirāman Kātibīn — the noble scribes of 82:10–12 — can be understood, at the level of physical mechanism, as the ubiquitous entanglement fields that continuously transcribe subjective choices into the irreversible objective record. This is a bold identification, and it should be received as theological interpretation rather than established science; but it gives verse 29’s nastansikhu a startlingly concrete physical texture.


Verse 45:30 — “Their Lord will admit them into His mercy”

Arabic:

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَيُدْخِلُهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْمُبِينُ

Mercy as the destination of the record

After the forensic architecture of verses 28–29, verse 30 delivers the verdict for the believers — and it is arresting that the destination is named not “paradise” or “reward” but raḥmah, mercy. The record is truthful and exhaustive; yet the believers’ entry is into mercy, not merely into an actuarial payout of merits. The classical balance holds: deeds are the necessary condition (āmanū wa ʿamilū’ṣ-ṣāliḥāt, “believed and did righteous deeds”), but the entry is by God’s grace. This is al-fawz al-mubīn, “the clear/manifest triumph” — the word mubīn (clear, self-evident) echoing the truthfulness (bi’l-ḥaqq) of the record in verse 29: the triumph is as manifest as the record that grounds it.

Personal identity, re-creation, and the pattern theory of the self

Verse 30’s promise that persons are admitted into mercy raises the deepest philosophical question the passage implies: what is it that is preserved, judged, and admitted? The atoms of a body are almost wholly replaced over a lifetime and wholly dispersed after death; in what sense is the resurrected person the same person? The medieval Islamic debate maps with uncanny precision onto the modern informational reading. Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā), holding the soul immortal, denied a bodily resurrection of the numerically same body; al-Ghazālī, in the Twentieth Discussion of the Tahāfut, defended bodily resurrection and reconstructed several models of how “the same” human could return. Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī held the Ashʿarite position that God can re-create what has been made non-existent (iʿādat al-maʿdūm), and this grounded his literal reading of bodily resurrection — while, late in life, he leaned toward the view (from Ibn al-Malāḥimī) that the essential parts are dissociated and reassembled rather than annihilated and re-created.

The information-theoretic reading offers a modern idiom for exactly this intuition: what makes you you is not the particular atoms but the pattern — the informational configuration. If the pattern is conserved (as unitarity and the no-deleting theorem say all quantum information is), then re-instantiating that pattern re-instantiates the person, whatever the substrate. This is the “pattern identity” or “informational template” of the self, and it renders al-Ghazālī’s and al-Rāzī’s re-creation defensible in a vocabulary a physicist can accept: resurrection as the reading-back of a conserved template into a new (glorified) medium. The believer admitted into mercy is not a copy but the continuation of a preserved pattern — the same argument by which Shah likens death and waking to sleep and rising, a “daily resurrection” in which the pattern persists while conscious interaction with the world is suspended.


The Simulation Hypothesis as Modern Qadar

The Book of Destiny — al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ — is the third of Shah’s four books, and it is here that the most speculative and most widely-discussed modern framework enters: the simulation hypothesis. The connection to al-Jāthiyah is not incidental. A cosmos that is owned in its entirety (45:27), whose every event is pre-inscribed (57:22), and whose every deed is transcribed from a master register (45:29, on the majority reading), is structurally isomorphic — Shah argues — to a computed reality logged against pre-written code.

Bostrom’s trilemma. Nick Bostrom’s 2003 paper in The Philosophical Quarterly (“Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?”) argues that at least one of three propositions is true: (1) almost all civilizations at our level go extinct before reaching a “posthuman” stage capable of running high-fidelity ancestor simulations; (2) almost no posthuman civilization is interested in running such simulations; or (3) we are almost certainly living in a simulation. The argument assumes substrate-independence of consciousness and a principle of indifference: if simulated minds vastly outnumber “base-reality” minds, a randomly selected observer is probably simulated. Shah maps the structure onto Islamic theology: the programmer occupies the role of First Cause (al-Khāliq); the source code corresponds to divine knowledge and will (ʿIlm and Mashīʾah); the complete log of every state at every time-step corresponds to al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ, making 57:22’s claim that every event is “in a register before We bring it into being” computationally natural; and the ghayb (the unseen) is simply the reality outside the simulation. (It should be noted that the trilemma has genuine critics — e.g., Weatherson and Tokayer argue the three disjuncts are not mutually exclusive and that the step to “we are probably simulated” is a non-sequitur.)

Chalmers’s Reality+. David Chalmers’s Reality+ (2022) treats the simulation hypothesis as serious metaphysics rather than skeptical nightmare. His central thesis of “simulation realism” is that a simulated world is not an illusion: if we are in a simulation, tables and chairs are perfectly real digital objects made of bits. Crucially for the theological reading, Chalmers observes that the simulation hypothesis functions as a modern creation argument; he quotes the transhumanist philosopher David Pearce’s remark, reproduced at simulation-argument.com, that “The Simulation Argument is perhaps the first interesting argument for the existence of a Creator in 2000 years.” Chalmers builds on Wheeler’s “it from bit” (or “it from qubit”): if the mathematical structure of physics can be recovered from digital physics, then digital physics realizes physics — the bits make the quarks real.

Wheeler, Lloyd, Tegmark, Gates, Beane. The informational turn Chalmers invokes runs deep. John Archibald Wheeler’s “it from bit” thesis held that every physical entity derives “from the posing of yes-no questions.” Seth Lloyd’s Programming the Universe (2006) argues that “particles not only collide, they compute,” and quantifies the cosmos’s total computational capacity. Max Tegmark’s mathematical-universe hypothesis proposes that physical reality is a mathematical structure — a modern extension of Eugene Wigner’s 1960 meditation on “the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences,” which called the fit between abstract mathematics and physical reality something “bordering on the mysterious.” Most intriguingly, S. James Gates, Jr. and collaborators (Doran, Faux, Hübsch, Iga, Landweber) discovered that the equations describing one-dimensional supersymmetry, when represented as graphs called adinkras, encode doubly-even self-dual linear binary error-correcting block codes — the very kind of codes used to correct errors in digital transmission — prompting Gates’s question of whether such codes “may be ubiquitous in nature, and could even be embedded in the essence of reality.” And Beane, Davoudi, and Savage’s 2012 paper “Constraints on the Universe as a Numerical Simulation” (arXiv:1210.1847; Eur. Phys. J. A 50, 148, 2014) showed that if our universe were a lattice simulation of the kind used in lattice QCD, “the most stringent bound on the inverse lattice spacing of the universe, b⁻¹ ≳ 10¹¹ GeV, is derived from the high-energy cut off of the cosmic ray spectrum” (the GZK cutoff), and that such a lattice might betray itself through a rotational-symmetry-breaking signature in the highest-energy cosmic rays. This is significant because it renders a version of the hypothesis, in principle, empirically testable — the exception that partly answers the charge of unfalsifiability.

Vopson’s infodynamics. Melvin Vopson’s mass-energy-information equivalence principle (2019) and “second law of infodynamics” (2022) propose that information is a physical entity with mass, and that the information entropy of systems tends to remain constant or decrease over time — which Vopson argues (in a 2023 AIP Advances paper) may support the simulated-universe hypothesis, as though the cosmos were compressing and optimizing its own data. These claims are genuinely fringe and unconfirmed — the mass-energy-information equivalence “has attracted a fair share of skepticism” and has not been experimentally validated — and they should be presented as speculative, not established. But they belong in an honest survey of the informational-cosmos literature.

Shah is careful — and I follow him — to treat the simulation hypothesis as a bridge to transcendence for secular minds, a heuristic that makes Qadar intuitively graspable as program-execution against a pre-written register, rather than as literal cosmology. The decisive theological differences remain: the Qur’anic Author is not a bored posthuman but the necessary, self-existent al-Ḥaqq; and, critically, the “code” does not abolish human agency — a point to which I now turn.


The Critiques, Honestly Stated

Intellectual honesty requires that the strongest objections be given their due, and several are decisive against the stronger versions of these claims.

Faizal et al. (2025): the Gödelian argument against simulation. In “Consequences of Undecidability in Physics on the Theory of Everything” (Journal of Holography Applications in Physics 5, no. 2, pp. 10–21, published 17 June 2025, DOI 10.22128/jhap.2025.1024.1118), Mir Faizal (UBC Okanagan), with Lawrence M. Krauss, Arshid Shabir, and Francesco Marino, argues that a complete and consistent description of reality requires “non-algorithmic understanding.” Drawing on Gödel’s incompleteness theorems, Tarski’s undefinability theorem, and Chaitin’s information-theoretic incompleteness, they contend that certain truths about quantum gravity’s “Platonic realm” of information are undecidable — provably true yet unreachable by any algorithm. As Faizal puts it: “since the fundamental level of reality is based on non-algorithmic understanding, the Universe cannot be, and could never be, a simulation.” This is a serious argument, and it cuts directly against the digital-physics reading. Two responses are worth noting: first, a 2025 rebuttal by Evan Redden (“Provability vs. Execution”) argues that Faizal conflates epistemic incompleteness (limits on what can be proven within a system) with ontological incompleteness (limits on what can be computed or executed), pointing out that a Turing-complete system like Conway’s Game of Life executes perfectly well despite hosting undecidable propositions; and second, that Faizal’s conclusion, if sound, does not refute the theological core of the Four Books thesis but arguably supports it — for it locates the ground of reality in a “non-algorithmic understanding… more fundamental than spacetime itself,” which is far closer to a divine ʿIlm than to a cosmic hard drive. The Four Books thesis is not committed to literal computationalism; the simulation is only ever a bridge.

Hossenfelder: the charge of pseudoscience. Sabine Hossenfelder argues forcefully that the simulation hypothesis, as usually stated, “just isn’t a serious scientific argument” but rests on faith: proponents make large, unexamined assumptions that natural laws — especially the symmetries of special and general relativity — can be reproduced algorithmically, and they cannot explain how. Her point that attempts to put physics on a discrete lattice generically break Lorentz invariance is technically substantive and constrains the naïve versions. The honest response is not to dismiss her but to concede the epistemic status: as literal cosmology the simulation hypothesis is not (yet) testable except in the narrow Beane–Davoudi–Savage sense, and it should be held as metaphysics or heuristic, not as science.

The general danger of concordism. Bucailleism has been criticized by Ziauddin Sardar, Pervez Hoodbhoy, and Taner Edis for straining verses to match a science that keeps moving; Shah himself acknowledges the critique. The methodological discipline that keeps the Four Books thesis honest is the one Shah states in his occasionalism corpus: distinguish (a) what the Qur’an says, (b) what physics establishes provisionally, and (c) what is analogy or theological inference. The physics of information conservation is robust and independently established; its identification with the Qur’anic Book of Deeds is analogy — illuminating, defensible, but not demonstrative. This essay affirms the former with confidence and offers the latter as interpretation.


Free Will and the Recording of Deeds

The passage’s insistence that deeds are recorded and requited (45:28–30) raises the free-will problem with special sharpness: if the Book of Destiny (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ) already contains every act “before We bring it into being” (57:22), in what sense are agents free, and how can recompense be just? This is a live concern for readers committed to libertarian free will, and it must be handled with care, because a careless reading of the recording verses collapses into fatalism — the very Dahriyya determinism the surah is refuting.

Two moves preserve genuine agency. First, the classical distinction between knowledge and causation: God’s foreknowledge (and its inscription in the Preserved Tablet) records what agents will freely do; it does not compel it, any more than a perfect video recording of a past choice caused that choice. The record is of the act, not its author. Shah frames this through the analogy of computational constraints: the Book of Destiny specifies the “operating system” — the physical constants, boundary conditions, and lawful arena — within which agents make real choices; it is the stable “hardware” that lets the “software” of human volition generate lasting consequences, not a script that dictates them. Second, on the decoherence model of recording, the moment of choice is precisely the moment a superposition of possibilities is collapsed into one actual outcome and written to the record. The recording does not precede and force the choice; it is the consequence of the choice being made, “cloned” (nastansikhu) into the objective ledger the instant it is enacted.

It should be said plainly that the Islamic tradition contains a spectrum here — from Ashʿarite kasb (acquisition), which many find insufficiently libertarian, to Māturīdī and Muʿtazilī positions that grant the human a more robust originative agency. The Four Books thesis, as developed at thequran.love, is officially neutral on which is correct, insisting only that the recording of deeds presupposes rather than negates their being the agent’s own; a record of coerced acts could ground no just recompense, and verse 28’s tujzawna mā kuntum taʿmalūn (“you are repaid for what you did“) is meaningless unless the deeds are genuinely the agents’. The reader inclined to libertarianism can consistently hold that God’s knowledge and its inscription are timeless and non-causal, that the block-universe’s fixity is the fixity of what is freely done rather than of what is compelled, and that the moral weight of 45:29 depends entirely on the deeds being truly ours. The passage’s whole rhetorical force — its indictment of arrogance in the verses that immediately follow (45:31, “you were arrogant and became a people of criminals”) — presupposes that the deniers could have done otherwise.


A Constellation of Seminal Verses

The Four Books thesis rests on the Qur’an’s own unusually tight vocabulary of inscription. The following verses, gathered here with their Arabic, form the scriptural backbone against which 45:24–30 should be read.

The Preserved Tablet and the Mother of the Book (Book of Destiny):

  • 85:21–22 — بَلْ هُوَ قُرْآنٌ مَّجِيدٌ ۝ فِى لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍ — “Nay, it is a glorious Qur’an, in a Preserved Tablet (Lawḥ Maḥfūẓ).”
  • 13:39 — يَمْحُوا۟ ٱللَّهُ مَا يَشَآءُ وَيُثْبِتُ ۖ وَعِندَهُۥٓ أُمُّ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ — “God erases what He wills and confirms, and with Him is the Mother of the Book (Umm al-Kitāb).”
  • 43:4 — وَإِنَّهُۥ فِىٓ أُمِّ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ لَدَيْنَا لَعَلِىٌّ حَكِيمٌ — “And indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.”
  • 54:49 — إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ بِقَدَرٍ — “Indeed, all things We created with measure (qadar).”
  • 57:22 — مَآ أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ إِلَّا فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مِّن قَبْلِ أَن نَّبْرَأَهَآ — “No disaster strikes on the earth or among yourselves but it is in a register before We bring it into being.”

Divine omniscience and the Clear Record (Book of Nature and Destiny):

  • 6:59 — وَعِندَهُۥ مَفَاتِحُ ٱلْغَيْبِ لَا يَعْلَمُهَآ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ … وَلَا رَطْبٍ وَلَا يَابِسٍ إِلَّا فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مُّبِينٍ — “With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them but He… nor anything fresh or dry but is in a clear record (kitāb mubīn).”
  • 10:61; 34:3 — the recurring formula that not an atom’s weight in the heavens or earth escapes “a clear record.”
  • 50:4 — قَدْ عَلِمْنَا مَا تَنقُصُ ٱلْأَرْضُ مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَعِندَنَا كِتَـٰبٌ حَفِيظٌ — “We know what the earth diminishes of them, and with Us is a preserving record (kitāb ḥafīẓ).”
  • 36:12 — إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْىِ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا۟ وَءَاثَـٰرَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ فِىٓ إِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍ — “We give life to the dead and record what they have sent ahead and their traces; all things We have enumerated in a clear register.”

The Book of Deeds and the reckoning:

  • 50:17–18 — the two recording angels, Raqīb and ʿAtīd: مَّا يَلْفِظُ مِن قَوْلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٌ — “He utters not a word but there is an observer ready beside him.”
  • 82:10–12 — وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ لَحَـٰفِظِينَ ۝ كِرَامًا كَـٰتِبِينَ ۝ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ — “Over you are guardians, noble scribes (Kirāman Kātibīn), who know whatever you do.”
  • 18:49 — وَوُضِعَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ … لَا يُغَادِرُ صَغِيرَةً وَلَا كَبِيرَةً إِلَّآ أَحْصَىٰهَا — “The record is placed… it leaves nothing small or great but it has enumerated it.”
  • 17:13–14 — وَكُلَّ إِنسَـٰنٍ أَلْزَمْنَـٰهُ طَـٰٓئِرَهُۥ فِى عُنُقِهِۦ ۖ … ٱقْرَأْ كِتَـٰبَكَ — “Every human’s record We have fastened to his neck… Read your record; sufficient is your own self this Day as reckoner.” (The word ṭāʾir, literally “bird,” subverts pre-Islamic augury: fate is read not from birds’ flight but from one’s own recorded deeds.)
  • 23:62 — وَلَدَيْنَا كِتَـٰبٌ يَنطِقُ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ — “With Us is a Book that speaks the truth, and they will not be wronged” (the direct parallel to 45:29’s yanṭiqu bi’l-ḥaqq).
  • 99:7–8 — فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُۥ ۝ وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُۥ — “Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.”
  • 54:52–53 — وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ ۝ وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُّسْتَطَرٌ — “Everything they did is in the written records; every small and great thing is inscribed.”

The testifying cosmos and the rolled-up scroll:

  • 41:20–22 — on the Day of Judgment the sinners’ own hearing, sight, and skins testify against them: شَهِدَ عَلَيْهِمْ سَمْعُهُمْ وَأَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ وَجُلُودُهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ — the body itself becomes a witness, an “evidentiary regime” in which the fantasy of secrecy collapses.
  • 24:24 — يَوْمَ تَشْهَدُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَلْسِنَتُهُمْ وَأَيْدِيهِمْ وَأَرْجُلُهُم — “the Day their tongues, hands, and feet bear witness against them.”
  • 21:104 — يَوْمَ نَطْوِى ٱلسَّمَآءَ كَطَىِّ ٱلسِّجِلِّ لِلْكُتُبِ — “the Day We roll up the heaven like the rolling of a scroll for records” — a cosmic image of the physical universe itself being furled like a written page.
  • 36:65 — ٱلْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَىٰٓ أَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَتُكَلِّمُنَآ أَيْدِيهِمْ — “This Day We seal their mouths, and their hands speak to Us.”

The signs of Nature and the call to reflection:

  • 3:190–191 — إِنَّ فِى خَلْقِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱخْتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ لِّأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ — “In the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day are signs for those of understanding” — the charter verse for reading the Book of Nature.

Read together, these verses articulate a single cosmology: a universe created by measure (qadar), pre-inscribed before it occurs, continuously recorded down to the atom, and finally unveiled with total, testifying clarity. Al-Jāthiyah 24–30 is a compressed enactment of that whole architecture.


The Three Grades of Certainty

The passage opens and closes on the theme of knowledge versus conjecture. The materialists “only conjecture” (yaẓunnūn, 45:24), and in the verse just beyond our passage (45:32) they dismiss the Hour as ẓann, mere surmise. Against this the Qur’an sets ḥaqq — truth, certainty, the real. The tradition articulates three ascending grades of certainty: ʿilm al-yaqīn (certainty by report and inference), ʿayn al-yaqīn (certainty by direct sight), and ḥaqq al-yaqīn (certainty by experiential consummation) — likened to hearing of a fire, then seeing its smoke, then being consumed by it. The materialist is stuck below even the first grade: his denial is ẓann dressed as knowledge. The Book of Revelation offers ʿilm al-yaqīn; the Book of Nature, read rightly, raises it toward ʿayn al-yaqīn; and the Day of the opened record delivers ḥaqq al-yaqīn, when “This Our Book speaks against you with truth” and conjecture is silenced forever.


Thematic Epilogue: A Cosmos of Records All the Way Down

Sūrat al-Jāthiyah 24–30 stages the oldest quarrel in the philosophy of existence: is the universe a meaningless drift toward erasure, or an authored, owned, and remembered reality? The Dahriyya gave the materialist answer with a candor rarely equaled: “nothing destroys us but time.” It is, in essence, the creed of thermodynamic nihilism — the conviction that entropy has the last word, that every deed and every self is bound for the same featureless dust, and that the moral difference between the tyrant and the saint is a local illusion soon dissolved.

The Qur’an’s answer is not a consolation but a cosmology. Time does not own us; God does — “to Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.” Time does not destroy us; God gives life, causes death, and gathers. And time does not erase us: “We were transcribing all that you used to do.” The astonishing thing, four centuries into the scientific revolution and one century into the age of quantum information, is that the deepest physics we possess has arrived, by its own independent road, at a picture of the cosmos as record rather than ruin. Unitarity forbids the destruction of quantum information. The no-deleting theorem gives information a strange permanence. Landauer’s principle makes erasure physically costly. The holographic principle and its error-correcting structure describe a universe that archives its interior on its boundary and reconstructs the lost from the preserved. Even the black hole, the very emblem of oblivion, has been shown to give its secrets back. The materialist’s arrow of erasure has quietly become physics’ ledger of conservation.

This convergence is the real force of Dr. Zia H. Shah’s Four Books thesis. Its power lies not in any single strained identification — not in claiming that the seventh century “predicted” the holographic principle, nor in reducing the recording angels to decoherence, nor in insisting that we literally inhabit a simulation. Its power lies in the structural observation that a scripture composed in the Arabian desert named four distinct orders of divine inscription — Revelation, Nature, Destiny, and Deeds — and that four independent currents of modern thought have converged, without collusion, on a reality that is informationally grounded, whose causal powers are less autonomous than they seem, whose history may be computed against a pre-written register, and whose every event is written ineffaceably into the fabric of things. Whether one reads this as confirmation, coincidence, or conceptual resonance, the convergence itself is worth thinking with. The classical exegetes said the Book “speaks” only as if it spoke — a metaphor for a record so complete it needs no witness. Modern physics suggests the metaphor may have been an understatement: in a universe that cannot delete, the record does not merely resemble speech; it is the indelible testimony of what was done. And when the last Hour dawns and every community kneels, the opening of that book will not be a magical apparition but the reading-back of what was always, truthfully, there. Hādhā kitābunā yanṭiqu ʿalaykum bi’l-ḥaqq.
