| 9:109 Is he, then, who founded his building on God consciousness and His pleasure better or he who has founded his building on the brink of a tottering water-worn bank which tumbled down with him into the fire of Hell? And Allah guides not the wrongdoing people. |
أَفَمَنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَانَهُ عَلَىٰ تَقْوَىٰ مِنَ اللَّـهِ وَرِضْوَانٍ خَيْرٌ أَم مَّنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَانَهُ عَلَىٰ شَفَا جُرُفٍ هَارٍ فَانْهَارَ بِهِ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ ۗ وَاللَّـهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ |

What is meant by founding one’s building or living one’s life ‘on the brink of a tottering water-worn bank which tumbled down with him into the fire of Hell?’
It could mean a lot of different things about our life style. One easy example is of those who choose a life style of promiscuity as opposed to chastity prescribed by Islam. Some 35 million people have died of AIDS since the start of the AIDS epidemic and another 40 million are living with HIV infection. A very large portion as a result of non-chaste life style. For, the last two decades or more non-religious experts have suggested oral sex as a safer option. But, more recent evidence has suggested that it turned out to be a tottering water-worn bank that collapsed. Here are some recent news items:

There are several verses in the holy Quran with a similar message. An important reference in this regard are these two verses from Surah Hajj: Devote yourselves to God and assign Him no partners, for the person who does so is like someone who fell from a height, and the birds snatched him up, or the wind blew him away to a distant place. That is the admonition. Whoso venerates the sacred Signs of Allah may be sure that it counts as righteousness of the heart for him. (22:31-32)
