Modern astronomy enormously enlarges their scale: planetary rotation, orbital motion, stellar evolution, galactic structure, and the temporal history of the universe all lie within “the heavens and the earth.”
Yet the verse does not call every observer ulū al-albāb. Possessing data is not identical to possessing understanding. Lubb signifies the inner core or purified intelligence. The people of understanding penetrate through appearance toward significance.
Scientific knowledge can describe how day and night alternate. Qur’anic reflection asks the further questions: Why is there an ordered reality capable of sustaining observers? Why are its regularities intelligible? Why does this world call forth wonder, gratitude, and responsibility?
14.3 Remembrance and reflection
Verse 191 joins dhikr and tafakkur: remembrance of God and reflection upon creation.
Remembrance without reflection can deteriorate into inattentive repetition. Reflection without remembrance can become detached, self-congratulatory abstraction. The Qur’anic knower cultivates both. God is remembered while standing, sitting, and reclining—through every posture and condition of life—while creation is studied with sustained thought.
The order is significant. The people of understanding do not merely announce that creation has purpose. They observe and reflect before declaring:
“Our Lord, You did not create this without purpose.”
This is a metaphysical conclusion emerging from engagement with the world. Cosmic order, intelligibility, beauty, fecundity, and lawfulness converge upon the recognition that reality is not bāṭil—vain, false, futile, or purposeless.
14.4 From cosmology to moral accountability
The passage immediately moves from purpose to judgment. If creation possesses purpose, then morally responsible persons cannot be mere accidental arrangements of matter whose choices vanish into final nothingness.
The Fire appears not as an arbitrary interruption of philosophical reflection but as its ethical consequence. A purposeful cosmos inhabited by morally responsible agents points toward accountability. The transition is:
cosmic order → divine purpose → human responsibility → final judgment
This prevents natural theology from becoming morally sterile. To recognize God as Creator while continuing in oppression would be an epistemic failure as well as a moral one.
14.5 Testimony and revelation
Verse 193 adds another mode of knowing: hearing the caller to faith. The believers did not derive the entire revealed message from astronomy. They received testimony.
They heard, evaluated, and responded. Observation alone could show the dependence and order of creation; reason could point toward a Creator; conscience could intimate responsibility. But the messenger announces the divine invitation and the path of forgiveness.
The Qur’anic epistemology is therefore cumulative:
- creation presents signs;
- reason interprets them;
- conscience recognizes their moral demand;
- revelation identifies their ultimate meaning;
- faith responds;
- prayer transforms knowledge into relationship.
14.6 Promise, resurrection, and rational trust
Verse 194 culminates in trust in the divine promise. The believers ask for what was promised through the messengers and ground their hope in God’s fidelity: “You never fail in Your promise.”
The promised future is not directly observable. Yet belief in it is not epistemically isolated. It rests upon the power affirmed in verse 189, the signs observed in verse 190, the conclusion of purpose in verse 191, the reality of accountability in verse 192, and the authenticated prophetic call in verse 193.
The six verses thus form a single ascent:
sovereignty → observation → reflection → purpose → accountability → testimony → faith → prayer → promised fulfillment
Few passages more beautifully unite the two wings of knowing.
15. Signs on Earth, Within the Self, and in the Promise: Qur’an 51:20–23
Surah al-Dhāriyāt offers another concentrated epistemology. Its movement is spatial and spiritual: earth, self, heaven, and finally the immediate certainty of one’s own speech. The Arabic text is followed by the user-provided English translation. The passage can also be read at Quran.com.
Qur’an 51:20
وَفِي الْأَرْضِ آيَاتٌ لِلْمُوقِنِينَ
On earth there are signs for those with sure faith—
Qur’an 51:21
وَفِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ
and in yourselves too, do you not see?—
Qur’an 51:22
وَفِي السَّمَاءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ
in the sky is your sustenance and all that you are promised.
Qur’an 51:23
فَوَرَبِّ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ مِثْلَ مَا أَنَّكُمْ تَنْطِقُونَ
By the Lord of the heavens and earth! All this is as real as your speaking.
(Al-Qur’an 51:20–23)
15.1 Signs throughout the earth
The earth is presented as a vast field of āyāt. Geology records a deep history of transformation. The hydrological cycle continually distributes fresh water. Soil sustains plant life through intricate chemical and biological processes. Ecosystems form networks of interdependence. Organisms display adaptation, cooperation, competition, reproduction, and repair.
The Qur’an does not restrict the signs to phenomena mysterious to ancient people. Familiar things are signs precisely because familiarity can conceal their astonishing character. A seed germinating, a bird navigating, a wound healing, or rain reviving dry ground may become ordinary to us without becoming philosophically trivial.
The verse specifies that these are signs “for those with certainty”—lil-mūqinīn. This need not mean that only those who already believe can see the physical phenomena. Rather, certainty grows when the observer recognizes that facts do not interpret themselves. The same earth may be treated as brute matter or read as meaningful creation. The Qur’an calls for an intellectually and morally receptive vision.
15.2 The human being as observer and observed
The next verse turns the gaze inward:
“And in yourselves—do you not see?”
Human beings are simultaneously investigators and objects of investigation. We study the universe through perceptual systems, brains, mathematical abilities, language, memory, and consciousness that are themselves parts of the universe requiring explanation.
The signs within us include:
- embryonic development from a microscopic beginning;
- the organization of trillions of cells;
- genetic inheritance and regulation;
- immune recognition and bodily repair;
- perception and coordinated movement;
- language and abstract thought;
- self-awareness and moral consciousness;
- love, grief, hope, freedom, and the search for meaning.
Biology can map mechanisms and causal pathways. Neuroscience can correlate mental states with neural processes. These are genuine and indispensable achievements. Yet first-person consciousness remains unlike an externally observed object. Pain is associated with neural activity, but the lived reality of pain is known from within. A brain scan and the experience it accompanies are related without being epistemically identical.
“Do you not see?” therefore includes more than eyesight. It summons introspection, rational self-knowledge, and existential awareness. The one searching for signs of transcendence is already a sign.
15.3 Sustenance from heaven
“In the sky is your sustenance” naturally evokes rain, sunlight, climate, atmospheric circulation, and the conditions that make agriculture and earthly life possible. Classical interpretations also connect heavenly sustenance with divine decree: provision ultimately depends upon God even when it reaches us through earthly causes.
A scientific description of rainfall does not negate divine provision. It identifies the created pathways by which provision arrives. Meteorology describes evaporation, condensation, pressure, and circulation. Theology asks why there is a stable, life-permitting order in which these processes operate.
The phrase also disciplines human arrogance. Farmers prepare soil and sow seed, but they do not manufacture sunlight, water, the laws of chemistry, or the germinal powers of life. Human labor is real, yet it works within gifts no human created.
15.4 “And what you are promised”
The verse joins sustenance with promise. The same heaven from which earthly life receives rain symbolizes the transcendent source of revelation, judgment, and resurrection.
Present provision becomes evidence for future fulfillment. The God who continually sustains creatures has not abandoned them to meaninglessness. The visible gift supports trust in the unseen promise.
This is not a strict deductive proof that compels every imaginable skeptic. It is a cumulative argument from divine power, providence, moral purpose, revelation, and the analogy of recurring life. Rain repeatedly revives the apparently dead earth; revelation announces that the Creator will likewise raise the dead.
15.5 The oath and the certainty of speech
Verse 23 intensifies the claim through a divine oath:
“By the Lord of the heavens and earth! All this is as real as your speaking.”
Speech is among our most immediate acts. A person speaking does not ordinarily require a telescope, laboratory, or philosophical proof to know that speech is occurring. The act presents itself directly to consciousness while also producing an externally perceptible sound.
The analogy therefore joins inward and outward certainty. Speech is internally known by the speaker and externally heard by others. Likewise, the promise is presented as objectively true even when its final fulfillment has not yet entered ordinary perception.
It would be overly technical to label awareness of one’s speech simply “a priori.” Speaking is an experienced event. Yet knowledge of it has an immediacy different from remote empirical inference. The verse deliberately appeals to something intimate, undeniable, and constantly enacted.
Its structure is magnificent:
- the earth provides public signs;
- the self supplies internal signs;
- the heaven represents provision and promise;
- the divine oath seals their truth;
- one’s own speaking becomes the analogy of certainty.
The passage begins with the widest external field and ends with the most immediate personal awareness. The Lord of the galaxies addresses the individual at the point where denial would become almost a denial of oneself.
Thematic Epilogue: When the Two Wings Become a Prayer
The history of philosophy often reads like a contest between the mind and the world. Rationalists feared that the senses could never provide necessity. Empiricists feared that reason, released from observation, would build castles in the air. Kant attempted a synthesis; Kripke separated categories that had been too easily conflated; Quine sought to naturalize the whole enterprise; Boghossian and Chalmers defended the irreducible work of rational understanding. Contemporary philosophers continue to disagree about the explanation, but a substantial majority affirm that human beings possess some a priori knowledge.
The Qur’an enters this conversation with a vision at once intellectually disciplined and spiritually expansive. It does not allow reason to despise experience or experience to silence reason. It does not reduce revelation to natural theology, nor does it ask revelation to substitute for investigation. Each source of knowledge has its place.
The heavens and earth are observed. Their order is rationally considered. The self becomes both witness and evidence. Prophetic testimony is heard and assessed. The unseen promise is trusted because the visible creation, the moral law, the divine attributes, and the credibility of revelation converge upon it. Knowledge finally becomes remembrance, humility, repentance, hope, and prayer.
Qur’an 3:189–194 begins with the dominion of God and ends with confidence that God never breaks His promise. Between those two affirmations stands the complete human knower: observing the cosmos, remembering in every posture, reflecting upon creation, recognizing purpose, fearing injustice, hearing the prophetic call, confessing fault, seeking forgiveness, and longing for the company of the righteous.
Qur’an 51:20–23 traces an equally beautiful path. Look beneath your feet: the earth is filled with signs. Look within: you yourself are a sign. Look above: your provision and promise come from beyond your control. Then listen to your own voice: the promised truth is as real as the speech by which you question it.
The two wings of knowing are therefore more than a philosophical classification. One wing is the disciplined openness to what God has made; the other is the rational capacity to recognize what the signs disclose. Revelation supplies direction, remembrance gives the journey constancy, and moral purification prevents pride from distorting the vision.
With only experience, the mind may accumulate facts without discovering their ultimate meaning. With only abstract reasoning, it may construct systems that never touch the living world. With revelation severed from reason and evidence, faith may decline into imitation. But when observation, reason, conscience, and revelation work together, knowledge becomes a flight from phenomenon to meaning, from contingency to dependence, from order to wisdom, from moral longing to judgment, and from the first creation to the promise of the second.
The destination is not merely the proposition that God exists. It is the recognition voiced by the people of understanding:
“Our Lord, You did not create all this without purpose.”
And once that recognition becomes sincere, philosophy becomes remembrance, cosmology becomes gratitude, epistemology becomes prayer, and the whole universe becomes an open book of signs leading toward its Author.
