Crucially, taskhīr is theocentric, not anthropocentric: it means God’s subjugation of nature for man, not man’s conquest of nature for himself. The verbs are in the divine first person — it is We who tamed them (dhallalnāhā), He who subjected this to us (sakhkhara lanā). “And He who created the pairs, all of them, and made for you of ships and grazing livestock those which you ride, that you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say, ‘Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it. The prescribed utterance — subḥāna alladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn — places a confession in the mouth of the rider. The verb sakhkhara is the taskhīr root; muqrinīn means “capable of bringing under control, of yoking, of matching in strength.” The confession is explicitly counterfactual: wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn concedes that the tractability of the mount is not something human strength could have wrung from a resistant nature. As Maududi renders it: “Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us whereas we did not have the strength to subdue it.” This is the Qur’anic anticipation of the domestication argument — the animal’s amenability is a given, not a conquest. The same theology recurs across the Qur’an. In Sūrat Yā-Sīn 36:71–73:

Sūrat al-Naḥl 16:5–8 widens the ledger and, notably, introduces beauty:

Verse 6, wa lakum fīhā jamālun (“and for you in them is beauty”), locates beauty in the utterly ordinary: the herds coming home in the evening and going out to pasture. The inventory of benefit is completed by the account of pure milk in 16:66:

“And the sacrificial camels We have made for you among the symbols of Allah; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.” (22:36, Saheeh International)
Across these passages a single grammatical structure recurs: the divine act of subjugation followed by a purposive clause — laʿallakum tashkurūn (“that you may be grateful”). A gift recognized as a gift generates gratitude; gratitude presupposes a giver; and a personal giver to whom thanks is owed is one before whom one is accountable. Purpose (the beast made for us) and accountability (we returning to Him) are the two faces of taskhīr.
II. Darwin’s Puzzle: The Domestication Syndrome

IV. Experimental Confirmation: Belyaev’s Silver Foxes
The neural crest hypothesis did not arise in a vacuum; it built directly on one of the most important biology experiments of the twentieth century. In 1959, the Soviet geneticist Dmitri Belyaev, working at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Siberia, set out to recreate domestication in real time. Rather than wolves, he used silver foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from Soviet fur farms and applied a single, ruthless selection criterion: in each generation he bred only the tamest individuals, those that responded with least fear and most friendliness when a human approached or inserted a hand into the cage. In Guns, Germs, and Steel (1997) and in a 2002 review in Nature (doi:10.1038/nature01019), Jared Diamond posed the question exactly. Of the world’s large wild terrestrial herbivorous mammals — species weighing 45 kg or more, the plausible candidates for domestication — how many were ever actually domesticated? His tabulation is exact: “only 14 of those 148 species were actually domesticated.” University of Washington These “Ancient Fourteen” comprise the “Major Five” (sheep, goat, cattle, pig, horse) and a “Minor Nine” (including the Arabian and Bactrian camels, llama/alpaca, donkey, reindeer, water buffalo, yak, Bali cattle, and mithan). Diamond explained this scarcity through what he called, borrowing Tolstoy, the Anna Karenina principle: “Domesticable animals are all alike; every undomesticable animal is undomesticable in its own way.” Domestication is a conjunctive success — it requires the simultaneous satisfaction of all six independent conditions, and “the lack of any single required characteristic dooms efforts at domestication, just as it dooms efforts at building a happy marriage.” Erenow The six requirements are: (1) a flexible, efficient herbivorous or omnivorous diet; (2) a fast growth rate; (3) willingness to breed in captivity; (4) a tractable, non-aggressive disposition; (5) a calm temperament that does not panic; and (6) a social dominance hierarchy that a human handler can exploit by inserting himself at the top. The failures are instructive. The zebra, despite its kinship to the horse, bites and does not let go, Giraffe Boards possesses a hardwired ducking reflex that defeats the lasso, and — critically — lacks a social hierarchy. As Francis Galton observed, quoted by Diamond, such species are “destined to perpetual wildness.” Erenow The deer dies of capture myopathy — a stress-induced, lethal muscle degeneration — running into fences in panic. The great carnivores (bears, tigers, lions) fail on the diet criterion and compound it with lethal aggression; the cheetah, tamed for millennia by Egyptian and Mughal nobles, would never breed in captivity.
This is the biological analogue of cosmic fine-tuning. Just as the universe is life-permitting only because a set of physical constants all fall within narrow life-permitting windows — as Fred C. Adams’ review “The Degree of Fine-Tuning in our Universe — and Others” (arXiv:1902.03928) documents for the Standard Model coupling constants and particle masses together with the cosmological parameters, with the cosmological constant tuned to roughly one part in 10¹²⁰ — the animal kingdom is human-serving only because a rare few species happen to combine docility, hierarchy, diet, growth, fertility, and calm. The animals could all have been like zebras and deer — indeed, that is the default condition of large mammals. The existence of a tractable minority is a contingency that did not have to obtain. The Qur’an names the reason for that contingency: dhallalnāhā lahum — “We made them tractable for them” (36:72). Where the atheist sees a brute fact requiring no explanation, the believer sees an āyah whose very improbability is its evidential weight.
The improbability deepens at the level of numbers. Cattle — the Qur’an’s central anʿām — descend from the now-extinct wild aurochs (Bos primigenius). ResearchGate Genetic analysis by Bollongino and colleagues (Molecular Biology and Evolution, 2012, doi:10.1093/molbev/mss092) estimated “that around 80 female aurochs were initially domesticated,” Oxford Academic a strikingly small founding population, “consistent with archaeological data indicating that initial domestication took place in a restricted area” ResearchGate of the Near East some 10,500 years ago. The 2024 Nature study “The genomic natural history of the aurochs” (Rossi et al., doi:10.1038/s41586-024-08112-6) confirmed that domestication “involved the capture of a small number of individuals from the Southwest Asian aurochs population.” The entire global edifice of cattle-based civilization — beef, milk, leather, traction, the sacrificial budn of Q 22:36 — rests on the taming of a tiny handful of wild cows from one narrow region. That so much depended on so improbable and slender a thread is, on the Qur’anic reading, not luck but providence.
VII. The Placenta as a Parallel Sign: Viruses Co-opted for Life
The neural crest is not the only case where evolution appears to have reached for a pre-existing mechanism to accomplish something that looks purposeful. A second, independent, and equally striking example — one Zia H. Shah, MD, has developed at length in his “Placenta” and “Guided Evolution” writings — is the evolution of the mammalian placenta from the genes of ancient viruses.
The placenta’s central function depends on the syncytiotrophoblast, a multinucleated layer at the maternal-fetal interface through which nutrients, oxygen, and antibodies pass while the mother’s immune system is prevented from rejecting the genetically “foreign” fetus. This layer forms when individual trophoblast cells fuse together. Thequran The astonishing discovery — first reported by Mi and colleagues in Nature in 2000 (doi:10.1038/35001608) — is that this cell fusion is mediated by syncytin, a protein that is literally the envelope gene of an ancient retrovirus that infected our ancestors and became permanently lodged in the germline. As the authors wrote, describing “the opposite situation” from the usual viral theft of host genes: “a viral gene has been sequestered to serve an important function in the physiology of a mammalian host.” Nature
The viral envelope protein had, by its original nature as a retrovirus, exactly the two properties placental development required: the ability to fuse cell membranes (retroviruses use it to fuse with host cells) and immunosuppressive domains (retroviruses use them to evade immune defenses). These were ready-made solutions to the two hardest problems of building a placenta. Thequran This is no marginal fraction of our genome: as one recent review notes (Curzio et al., Physiological Genomics, 2023), “Approximately 8% of the human genome, over four times more than its protein-coding regions, comprises sequences of viral origin that are known as human endogenous retroviral elements (HERVs).”
That syncytins are not incidental but essential was proven definitively by Dupressoir and colleagues (PNAS, 2009, doi:10.1073/pnas.0902925106): knockout mice lacking syncytin-A die in utero between days 11.5 and 13.5 of gestation, PNAS their placental fusion layer never forming. Without the co-opted virus, there is no placenta, and no live birth. Most remarkably of all, this capture happened repeatedly and independently: primates use syncytin-1 and syncytin-2 (from HERV-W and HERV-FRD); mice use the unrelated syncytin-A and -B; rabbits use syncytin-Ory1; carnivores syncytin-Car1; ruminants (including cattle) syncytin-Rum1; nih and the pattern extends even to a viviparous lizard. Different viruses, captured at different times, in different lineages, were each pressed into the same function — the formation of the placenta. ASM Journals
Here the parallel to the neural crest and to Taskhīr becomes exact. In both cases, a mechanism that already existed for another purpose entirely — a viral fusion protein; a vertebrate embryonic cell population — was available, latent, ready, and was then recruited to produce something of profound benefit to the higher creature. What a retrovirus did for the placenta, “humanity cannot do,” in the spirit of Q 43:13. The believer reads both as instances of the same divine grammar: the instrument of the gift was laid down in advance, and the creature is the beneficiary of a providence it did not author.
VIII. Guided Evolution: The Middle Path
The framework that unites the neural crest, the domesticable beast, and the placenta is what the Ahmadiyya Muslim tradition — to which the author belongs — calls guided evolution. It is a middle path between two extremes: the atheistic Neo-Darwinism that insists evolution is blind, purposeless, and unguided; and the creationism that denies the evolutionary process altogether. Guided evolution accepts the full scientific account of descent with modification over billions of years, while holding that the process is teleologically ordered — that God set the initial conditions and laws of nature, and superintends the process, so that evolution achieves His intended designs. On this view, the mechanism is the means of divine action, not its rival. It is continuous with the “directed evolution” articulated by Mirza Tahir Ahmad (1928–2003) in Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge and Truth, which accepts that life ascended through stages of complexity over billions of years while insisting the process is purposively ordered.
The most serious atheist objection must be met head-on: are not the six domestication traits, the neural crest pleiotropy, and the syncytin capture all fully explained by evolution, with no God required? Cattle are docile because docility was adaptive; neural crest cells produce correlated traits because of ordinary developmental genetics; viruses were co-opted because natural selection favored the ones that worked. The objection assumes that specifying a mechanism eliminates a purpose. But this is a category error. To describe how milk is synthesized between “excretion and blood” (16:66) does not answer why the universe contains such productive possibilities, or for whom they operate. A complete account of breeding, embryology, and virology would still leave standing the philosophical question of whether reality’s astonishing fruitfulness expresses intention. Discovering the mechanism of a blessing does not abolish the Giver.
The Qur’an’s own vocabulary for this is the language of measure and guidance. Q 87:1–3 is the guided-evolution verse par excellence:
سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى ﴿١﴾ الَّذِي خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ ﴿٢﴾ وَالَّذِي قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ ﴿٣﴾
“Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High, who created and proportioned, and who destined and [then] guided.” (87:1–3, Saheeh International)
The two verbs — qaddara (He measured, determined, apportioned) and hadā (He guided) — are the theological names for what biology calls, respectively, the fine-tuning of initial conditions and the directedness of the evolutionary process. The same root appears in Q 25:2, wa khalaqa kulla shayʾin fa-qaddarahu taqdīrā (“and He created each thing and determined it with precise determination”), and Q 54:49, innā kulla shayʾin khalaqnāhu bi-qadar (“indeed, all things We created with predestination”). Ibn Kathīr, glossing these, understood qadar as God having “measured out the total sum of everything and then guided the creation to it.” Maududi comments: “Nothing in the world has been created at random but with a purpose and destiny.” The neural crest switch installed in the embryo, and the viral gene captured for the placenta, are taqdīr made molecular — measure and guidance written into the deep structure of life.
Fine-tuning sits upstream of the whole debate. Evolution can only run in a universe whose constants already permit stable chemistry, long-lived stars, and liquid water. To grant evolution is already to grant the fine-tuned stage on which it runs. Thus the three signs — cosmic fine-tuning (the macro scale), the domesticable beast and its neural crest (the biological scale), and the placenta (the developmental scale) — form concentric circles, each carrying the same evidential grammar: a narrow, improbable, life-favoring, benefit-bearing outcome that “did not have to be,” and each sealed with the same imperative, laʿallakum tashkurūn, “that you may be grateful.”
IX. Accountability and Gratitude
The Qur’an never leaves the argument at the level of cold cosmology or dry genetics. Every taskhīr passage terminates in a moral demand. The subjugation of the animal exists for the sake of gratitude (laʿallakum tashkurūn, 22:36), and gratitude issues in taqwā — God-consciousness — the very disposition on which accountability in the Afterlife turns. Q 22:37 makes the point unforgettable: “Neither their flesh reaches Allah nor their blood; it is your piety (taqwā) that reaches Him.”
The logic is inexorable. A world of unmerited provisions addressed to conscious beneficiaries is a world in which the appropriate response — gratitude — is a moral response, and its refusal is a moral failure. Moral responses presuppose responsibility; responsibility presupposes a standard and a judge. This is why al-Zukhruf moves in a single breath from “remember the favor of your Lord” (43:13) to “and indeed, to our Lord we will surely return” (43:14). The neural crest that makes the ox tractable and the syncytin that makes birth possible are not neutral facts; they are gifts, and a universe of gifts is a universe of debts, and a universe of debts is a universe of reckoning. To ride the beast, drink the milk, be born through the placenta, and shelter under the hide while denying the Giver is, in the Qur’an’s diagnosis, the paradigmatic ingratitude (kufr — a word that also means disbelief). The precise inversion of the atheist thesis is this: the very features that make the world hospitable are the features that make it morally freighted.
Thematic Epilogue: The Switch Laid Down Before the Beginning
Stand back, and a single figure emerges. Before there were mammals, the neural crest was already woven into the vertebrate embryo, carrying within its migratory pathways a dormant coupling — a switch linking fear to form, so that whoever one day reduced an animal’s terror would receive, unbidden, its softened ears and gentled face. Before there were placental mammals, ancient viruses had already deposited into the germline the fusion proteins that would one day knit the layer through which every mammal would be born. Before there were human beings to ride, to milk, to sacrifice, and to give thanks, the docile constitution of a rare fourteen species out of one hundred forty-eight had been apportioned — qaddara — and the instrument of their subjugation prepared.
Humanity invented none of it. The Neolithic herder who first led a calf did not design the neural crest; the mother who first nursed her child did not author the syncytin in her placenta; the rider who first mounted a camel and, at the Prophet’s teaching, whispered subḥāna alladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn did not engineer the tractability beneath him. Each was the beneficiary of a mechanism laid down ages in advance, latent in the deep architecture of life, waiting only to be triggered. This is what the biology of domestication, read with open eyes, discloses: not a blind and tasteless accident, but a creation pre-loaded with the instruments of its own gift-giving.
The zebra that will not be ridden and the deer that dies of fright are not flaws in creation but foils that throw the gift into relief — they prove that the ox and the camel are graces, not necessities. And the gift, once recognized, cannot be received in silence. The whole cosmos — the fine-tuned constants, the domesticable beast, the viral architect of the womb — speaks, on this reading, a single word: āyah, a sign. And every sign points one way: to the One who subjected all this to us, whom by ourselves we could never have subdued, and to whom we shall surely return.
Wa innā ilā rabbinā la-munqalibūn. — “And indeed, to our Lord we will surely return.” (Q 43:14)
