Audio teaser: Al-Ghazali and the cosmic video game
Abstract This comprehensive report provides an exhaustive, multidisciplinary defense of Islamic occasionalism as originally formulated by Abu Hamid al-Ghazali and contemporaneously synthesized by the philosopher and physician Dr. Zia H. Shah MD. Countering the post-Enlightenment paradigm of a distant, Deistic “clockmaker” God, this analysis demonstrates that the Allah of the Glorious Quran is an intimately participating, ever-present Sovereign whose continuous creative act sustains reality nanosecond by nanosecond. By structurally aligning the classical Ash’arite doctrine of metaphysical atomism with modern quantum mechanics, the simulation hypothesis, and physical information theory (“It from Bit”), this report establishes that the so-called “laws of nature” are fundamentally the habitual customs of the Divine Will (Sunnat Allah). The investigation spans multiple scales of cosmic reality: from the subatomic indeterminacy of quantum fields and the precise fine-tuning of a biophilic universe containing two trillion galaxies, to the guided evolutionary architecture of nine million extant species and the intricate neural substrates of eight billion human minds. Furthermore, the analysis explores how God communicates with creation, utilizing the phenomenon of dreams as an analogue for the revelation given to the 124,000 prophets, unified under Dr. Shah’s “Four Books Thesis.” Crucially, this thesis reconciles the absolute omnipotence of God with human moral responsibility through the Ash’arite doctrine of Kasb (acquisition), proving that total divine participation does not negate human free will. By harmonizing the Book of Scripture with the Book of Nature, this seminal work presents an unapologetic defense of an Inshallah universe—a reality that is a continuous, frame-by-frame rendering by a Transcendent Creator.
1. The Ontological Rupture with Deism: The Theology of the Ever-Present Sustainer
The dominant metaphysical assumption of the modern secular age, heavily influenced by the Enlightenment and Newtonian mechanics, is rooted in Deism. This worldview posits a First Cause who initiated the universe but subsequently abandoned it to operate autonomously via immutable, mechanical laws. This “clockwork universe” paradigm conceptually isolates the Creator from creation, rendering divine intervention a logical anomaly and relegating God to the margins of cosmic history. However, the ontological framework established by the Glorious Quran aggressively dismantles this premise. The Allah of the Quran is not an absent architect; He is the Ever-Present Sustainer who participates in the unfolding of reality at every discrete moment in time.
This radical contingency of the cosmos upon an active Creator is most majestically encapsulated in Ayat al-Kursi (The Crown Verse), which serves as the ultimate charter of Islamic metaphysics:
“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.” (Quran 2:255)
The pairing of the divine names Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living) and Al-Qayyum (The All-Sustaining / The Self-Subsisting) fundamentally nullifies autonomous naturalism. Derived from the Arabic root qāf-wāw-mīm, Al-Qayyum signifies the One who stands by Himself, requiring no support, while all of creation depends entirely upon Him for its ongoing existence. The physical universe lacks intrinsic inertia to exist; its continuation is a moment-by-moment gift from a Vigilant Mind. The explicit negation of “drowsiness” (sinatun) and “sleep” (nawmun) indicates that if God’s active processing of reality were to pause for even a Planck time interval, the entire cosmos would collapse into nothingness. Therefore, every chemical reaction, gravitational orbit, and cellular division is not the result of blind physical necessity, but a direct, real-time manifestation of divine participation.
2. Al-Ghazali’s Occasionalism and Ash’arite Metaphysics: Reality as a Frame-by-Frame Rendering
To rigorously systematize this Quranic worldview, the 11th-century theologian and philosopher Abu Hamid al-Ghazali articulated the doctrine of occasionalism (al-Mawāqif). Confronted by the Aristotelian and Avicennian philosophers (Falasifa) who asserted that the universe operates through a chain of necessary secondary causes—whereby physical substances possess inherent, autonomous powers to cause effects—Al-Ghazali recognized a severe theological threat. If nature possessed inviolable, independent causal efficacy, then God’s absolute omnipotence would be constrained, rendering the miracles of the prophets logically impossible and reducing God to a passive observer of His own machine.
In the seventeenth discussion of his seminal work, Tahafut al-Falasifa (The Incoherence of the Philosophers), Al-Ghazali deconstructed the assumption of necessary causality centuries before David Hume’s empiricist critiques. Al-Ghazali argued that human observation merely witnesses “constant conjunction” (e.g., fire touching cotton, followed by the cotton burning) but never an empirical “necessary connection”. For the occasionalist, fire does not burn by its own autonomous power; rather, God directly creates the state of burning in the cotton precisely when it intersects with the fire. The observed regularities in the universe—which scientists measure and codify as laws—are merely the “customs” or “habits” of the Divine Will (Sunnat Allah).
The philosophical counter-attack mounted by Ibn Rushd (Averroes) in Tahafut al-Tahafut (The Incoherence of the Incoherence) sought to rescue Aristotelian causality, arguing that stripping nature of its causal powers destroys the intelligibility of the universe and undermines the predictability required for science. However, Al-Ghazali’s occasionalism does not discard scientific inquiry; it simply reframes its metaphysical foundation. Science discovers how events regularly unfold according to the divine habit, while theology explains the ultimate why.
Underlying this Ghazalian philosophy is the Ash’arite doctrine of metaphysical atomism. Classical Islamic theologians theorized that the universe consists of indivisible spatial atoms (jawahir) and transient temporal accidents (a’rad). Crucially, Ash’arite atomism dictates that these accidents have no temporal duration—they do not last for two successive instants of time. Because the properties of matter vanish immediately after their creation, reality must be perpetually re-created (tajdid al-khalq) at every successive, discrete instant.
This continuous re-creation is explicitly validated by the Quran:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُمْسِكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ أَن تَزُولَا ۚ وَلَئِن زَالَتَا إِنْ أَمْسَكَهُمَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِّن بَعْدِهِ
“Indeed, Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should vanish, no one could hold them back after Him.” (Quran 35:41)
“Every day He is engaged in a [new] matter.” (Quran 55:29)
As presented by Dr. Zia H. Shah MD, this classical Ghazalian framework maps perfectly onto the digital metaphor of a high-resolution simulation. The universe does not exist as a static, self-sustaining entity with its own inertia; it is a “story unfolding in real time,” a constantly rendered scene generated by a transcendent Processor who sustains the physical constants frame by frame.
3. The 99 Attributes: The Metaphysical Architecture of the Cosmos
The validation of God’s total, nanosecond-by-nanosecond participation in the universe is encoded in the 99 Beautiful Names of Allah (Al-Asma-ul-Husna). Within Islamic metaphysics, these attributes are not mere poetic honorifics; they represent the ontological software and functional architecture of the cosmos. Under the occasionalist model, the physical laws of nature are the mathematical manifestations of specific divine names interacting with the physical substrate.
The continuous generation and evolutionary design of the universe is governed by the structural triad found in Surah Al-Hashr:
هُوَ اللَّهُ الْخَالِقُ الْبَارِئُ الْمُصَوِّرُ ۖ لَهُ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۖ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
“He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is glorifying Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” (Quran 59:24)
To understand how these attributes dismantle Deism and support continuous participation, one must analyze their distinct operational domains across the physical and biological sciences:
| Divine Attribute | Occasionalist / Scientific Translation | Cosmic Function |
|---|---|---|
| Al-Khaliq (The Creator) | The Originator of quantum potentiality. | Brings physical states from non-existence into being at every Planck interval, acting as the sole efficient cause of the universe’s baseline reality. |
| Al-Bari’ (The Evolver/Maker) | The Architect of biological and cosmic order. | Manages the developmental proportions, genetic mutations, and directed evolutionary trajectories of physical matter, ensuring order emerges from chaos. |
| Al-Musawwir (The Fashioner) | The source of teleological beauty and form. | Fine-tunes aesthetic diversity, formal qualities, and emergent complexity, from the elegant spirals of galaxies to the intricate folding of cellular proteins. |
| Al-Alim / Al-Khabir (The Omniscient / All-Aware) | The Ultimate Information Processor. | Encompasses the position and momentum of every subatomic particle simultaneously without computational lag, tracking the innermost thoughts of all sentient life. |
| Al-Qadir / Al-Muqtadir (The Omnipotent/Determiner) | The absolute monopolizer of causality. | Executes events directly, overriding statistical probabilities or material constraints when establishing miracles, bypassing any need for physical intermediaries. |
Through these attributes, the cosmos is entirely stripped of autonomous power. A star undergoes nuclear fusion not because of the inherent “necessity” of hydrogen atoms, but because Al-Qadir continuously binds the strong nuclear force, while Al-Musawwir fashions the resulting photonic emission. This constitutes an architecture where the divine names serve as the active verbs of existence.
4. Quantum Indeterminacy and the “It from Bit” Universe
The 20th-century transition from classical Newtonian mechanics to quantum physics inflicted a fatal blow on deterministic materialism, creating a profound scientific convergence with Al-Ghazali’s occasionalism. The discovery of quantum indeterminacy, wave-function collapse, and non-local entanglement revealed that at its foundational level, the universe does not behave as a locally real, predictable machine with inherent material properties.
Modern theoretical physics offers several interpretations of this quantum weirdness, yet all of them align remarkably with the occasionalist paradigm. Whether one subscribes to the Copenhagen interpretation (where a wave-function collapses upon observation), the Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI), Pilot-Wave theory, or Quantum Bayesianism (QBism), all rigorous frameworks share a shocking consensus: the physical properties of subatomic particles are not actualized until they interact with an observational or decoherence framework.
As physicist John Archibald Wheeler famously posited with his “It from Bit” doctrine, the universe is fundamentally constructed of information, not solid matter. Information theory dictates that information cannot exist without a physical medium or a processor; it requires an active, witnessing consciousness to render the “bit” (the data) into the “it” (the physical manifestation). This implies that the universe is essentially a processing system that requires a non-local Agency to sustain it.
Dr. Zia H. Shah MD utilizes the Simulation Hypothesis to contextualize this reality for the modern intellect. If the universe is fundamentally informational—a holographic or simulated projection—it necessitates a computational substrate that exists outside the simulation. Just as a digital environment ceases to exist if the server’s RAM is cleared, the physical universe requires the perpetual “Refresh Rate” maintained by Al-Qayyum to prevent a systemic crash into nothingness.
The Quran explicitly describes this informational, non-material architecture sustaining macro-structures such as gravity:
“It is Allah who erected the heavens without pillars that you [can] see; then He established Himself above the Throne and made subject the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. He arranges [each] matter; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain.” (Quran 13:2)
The “invisible pillars” (bighayri amadin tarawnaha) represent the forces of gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces. Under occasionalism and quantum field theory, these forces possess no inherent physical scaffolding; they are purely mathematical regulations (information) constantly enforced and upheld by God’s continuous command. Furthermore, quantum information theory (specifically Landauer’s Principle and the no-hiding theorem) suggests that information is perfectly conserved. The Islamic concept of the “Recording Angels” (Kiraman Katibin) can thus be understood as the anthropomorphic representation of the decoherence fields that permanently write human actions into the fabric of space-time, proving that no deed is ever truly erased without a thermodynamic cost.
5. Exotheology, Fine-Tuning, and Infinite Providence in Two Trillion Galaxies
The scale of this continuous divine rendering becomes staggeringly incomprehensible when examining modern astrophysics. Contemporary cosmological consensus, heavily augmented by deep-space surveys from the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), indicates that our observable universe contains an estimated two trillion (2 × 10¹²) galaxies. This mind-boggling figure was derived through the Nottingham methodology and the faint galaxy paradigm, which utilized mathematical modeling to infer the presence of galaxies that are too faint or distant to be directly resolved, thereby solving Olbers’ paradox. Each of these two trillion galaxies harbors hundreds of billions of stars, and consequently, hundreds of billions of planetary systems within habitable zones.
Furthermore, the 13.8-billion-year-old universe is astoundingly “biophilic”—precisely fine-tuned in its cosmological constants (such as the ratio of the electromagnetic force to gravity, the expansion rate of the universe, and the mass of fundamental particles) to support intelligent life. The sheer statistical improbability of this fine-tuning acts as an overwhelming teleological proof of an intentional Designer. While secular materialists attempt to bypass this via the anthropic principle or string-theory multiverse landscapes (positing 10500 random universes), the occasionalist views this fine-tuning as the deliberate fingerprint of Al-Musawwir across an unfathomably vast canvas.
The Quran anticipated this cosmic pluralism and the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence centuries before the invention of the telescope, articulating an exotheology that accommodates countless inhabited worlds:
“It is Allah who has created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them. [His] command descends among them so you may know that Allah is over all things competent and that Allah has encompassed all things in knowledge.” (Quran 65:12)
In Quranic cosmology, the “seven heavens and of the earth the like of them” points toward an abundance of habitable planets and extraterrestrial biological communities. For the modern believer, this validates an extraordinary philosophical premise: the same Omniscient Mind that manages the gravitational choreography, the quantum states, and the sustenance of extraterrestrial intelligence across two trillion galaxies simultaneously is also intimately aware of, and responsive to, the individual earthly trials of a single human being. The vastness of the universe does not dilute God’s providence; rather, it exists specifically to demonstrate (li-ta’lamu) that His power and informational processing capacity (Al-Alim, Al-Muhit) are truly infinite and unburdened.
6. Guided Evolution and the Architectural Blueprint of Nine Million Species
Shifting from the macro-cosmic scale of galaxies to the biological reality of our planet, current biodiversity estimates indicate there are approximately 9 million extant species on Earth today, alongside billions more that have gone extinct over a 3.8-billion-year geological history. Materialist neo-Darwinism attempts to explain this staggering complexity through “blind” mechanisms: random genetic mutation, unguided genetic drift, and natural selection.
However, the occasionalist framework presented by Dr. Zia H. Shah MD meticulously separates the biological mechanism of common ancestry from the philosophical assumption of blindness. The Quran unequivocally supports the concept of biological life originating from a common source and undergoing progressive developmental stages:
فَانظُرْ إِلَىٰ آثَارِ رَحْمَتِ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ يُحْيِي الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا
“So observe the effects of the mercy of Allah—how He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness.” (Quran 30:50)
The transition of life—from ancient extremophiles to the complex bioluminescence of fireflies and the unparalleled cognitive architecture of Homo sapiens—requires continuous, directed informational input. According to information theory, the generation of highly specified, irreducibly complex functional information cannot arise purely from stochastic (random) noise. Therefore, evolution is heavily guided. The twinkling lights of fireflies, which utilize a highly efficient chemical reaction for communication, did not emerge merely as a random quirk of survival, but as a phenomenon of aesthetic surplus designed by God, “the Beautiful,” who weaves beauty into the fabric of life.
Dr. Shah introduces a profound parallel between biological and linguistic software to illustrate this divine guidance.
| Feature | Biological Hardware (DNA) | Linguistic Software (Arabic) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Units | 4 Chemical Bases (A, T, C, G) | 28 Consonants/Letters |
| Basic Word Unit | 3-Letter Codon | 3-Letter Root (Jidhr) |
| Functional Diversity | 9 Million Extant Species | Thousands of Derived Words |
| Operating System | Guided Evolution (Al-Bari’) | Revealed Language (Tawqif) |
| Universal Nature | Universal Genetic Code | Progenitor of Revelation |
Just as the Arabic language—the software of divine revelation—is built upon a foundational trilateral (three-letter) root system, the biological hardware of all 9 million species is constructed using a three-letter genetic codon system translated from a four-letter nucleotide alphabet. This universal genetic code, evidenced by homologous proteins and shared genetic markers across taxa, implies a single, unifying Al-Bari’ (Evolver) and Al-Musawwir (Fashioner). God uses the mechanisms of natural selection and mutation not as blind forces, but as the deliberate, frame-by-frame instruments through which He paints the canvas of the biosphere.
7. The “Hard Problem” of Consciousness and the Epistemology of Eight Billion Minds
While modern science has successfully mapped the human genome and probed the edges of the observable universe, it remains utterly paralyzed by the “Hard Problem of Consciousness” (a term coined by David Chalmers)—the question of how raw, inert, dead matter (atoms and neurons) can suddenly generate subjective, first-person qualitative experience (qualia). Materialist philosophy insists on “brute emergence,” an almost magical leap where non-conscious parts somehow arrange themselves in a complex configuration and suddenly “wake up” to become self-aware. As Dr. Shah argues, believing a dead universe can accidentally give rise to consciousness is philosophically indistinguishable from believing in magic, as it posits an effect qualitatively superior to its cause.
Occasionalism, bolstered by Islamic theology, offers a vastly superior explanatory model. A “dead” universe cannot generate consciousness; rather, consciousness is a fundamental property of the Divine that is conditionally bestowed upon the creature. Dr. Shah utilizes the “Radio Analogy” to elucidate this reality: the physical brain does not produce consciousness; it is merely a biological receiver (hardware) evolved to pick up the transmission of the soul (Ruh) from a transcendent dimension (Alam al-Amr). When the radio (the brain) is damaged, the music (the personality) is distorted, but the signal (the soul) remains intact, eventually returning to its Source at death.
Because consciousness is essentially the intersection point of the finite human mind and the Infinite Divine Presence, God is instantly aware of the innermost thoughts, anxieties, and unvoiced prayers of all 8 billion humans on Earth. Since He is the Provider of the signal, there is no latency or distance in His knowledge:
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِ نَفْسُهُ ۖ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِيدِ
“And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.” (Quran 50:16)
This verse destroys any localized, spatial conception of God. The Divine Observer is actively rendering the neurochemical pathways and synaptic gaps in 8 billion human brains simultaneously, serving as the immediate substrate for all subjective experience. Meaning, truth, justice, and love are not chemical byproducts of a dead universe; they are transcendent realities channeled into the human receiver.
8. Dreams, the 124,000 Prophets, and the Four Books Thesis
If reality is an informational construct sustained by God, then communication from the Creator to the created is a logical necessity. Islamic tradition posits that God deployed a massive, universal educational program throughout human history, sending 124,000 prophets across all geographies and nations to guide humanity back to pure monotheism. The Quran explicitly denies that guidance is the exclusive preserve of the Semitic peoples, affirming that a warner was sent to every nation (Quran 35:24). From well-known Biblical figures to unnamed sages potentially reflecting Eastern wisdom traditions (such as Buddha, Lao Tzu, or Confucius), the message of Tawhid was universally calibrated to the developmental stage of the audience.
But how does the Infinite communicate with the finite? The biological phenomenon of sleep and dreams provides the universal analogy for revelation (Wahy). During sleep, the sensory inputs of the physical world are disconnected, and consciousness operates in an unconstrained informational space.
“Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” (Quran 39:42)
“And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him.” (Quran 6:59)
Dr. Shah establishes that dreams represent a localized experience where the human soul temporarily accesses higher ontological planes. This capacity for receiving internal, non-physical knowledge provides every human with an experiential framework for understanding how the 124,000 prophets received Wahy. Prophetic revelation is a highly intense, perfectly preserved download of data from the Divine Realm into the purified human receiver.
This mechanism is systematized in Dr. Zia H. Shah’s “Four Books Thesis,” a grand unified cosmology that expands the traditional “Two Books” theory (the harmony between Scripture and Nature) into a comprehensive four-tiered informational reality:
| The Book of God | Definition within the Four Books Thesis |
|---|---|
| 1. The Book of Revelation | (Al-Quran / Wahy) God’s verbal software and moral law downloaded to the prophets. |
| 2. The Book of Nature | (Al-Khalq) The physical hardware of the universe (from quantum fields to galaxies) constantly rendered by God’s sustaining power. |
| 3. The Book of Destiny | (Al-Lawh al-Mahfuz) The master source code, the “Mother of the Book” (Umm al-Kitab), containing the immutable blueprint of all possibilities. |
| 4. The Book of Deeds | The immutable, quantum recording of every human intention and action for final judgment, operating akin to a cosmic ledger. |
This architecture is affirmed in the Quran:
يَمْحُو اللَّهُ مَا يَشَاءُ وَيُثْبِتُ ۖ وَعِندَهُ أُمُّ الْكِتَابِ
“Allah erases what He wills and confirms, and with Him is the Mother of the Book.” (Quran 13:39)
Through this paradigm, the entirety of human history, biological evolution, and prophetic revelation is united under a single, coherent informational architecture authored by one Mind.
9. The Locus of Moral Agency: Occasionalism and the Doctrine of Kasb
A frequent, albeit superficial, critique of occasionalism is the accusation of fatalism: if God creates every single action, motion, and thought in the universe directly, does this not obliterate human free will and moral accountability? If a human hand moves, and it is God who creates both the intention and the physical movement of the atoms, how can the human be judged for a sin or rewarded for virtue?
The Quran actively maintains the tension between God’s ultimate sovereign causality and human action:
وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ رَمَىٰ
“And you did not throw when you threw, but it was Allah who threw.” (Quran 8:17)
“O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.” (Quran 8:24)
To resolve this paradox without compromising God’s monopoly on power (Al-Muqtadir), classical Ash’arite theologians, heavily championed by Al-Ghazali, formulated the doctrine of Kasb (Acquisition). Kasb operates as a sophisticated compatibilist framework designed to preserve moral responsibility within a matrix of total divine control.
In this paradigm, true, independent causal efficacy (creating an action from nothingness into reality) belongs solely to God. However, the human being is granted the internal locus of intention and volition. When a human being generates the psychological intent to perform an action, God instantaneously creates the corresponding physical action in reality, attaching the moral weight of the act to the human. Thus, God creates the act, but the human acquires (kasb) the moral responsibility for choosing it.
This demonstrates that free will is not a sovereign, independent force that competes with God’s power; it is a localized, non-sovereign subset nested entirely within the Divine Will. The Quran perfectly summarizes this nested reality, providing the ultimate seal on the doctrine of total contingency:
وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ
“And you do not will except that Allah wills – Lord of the worlds.” (Quran 81:29)
Human beings possess sufficient free will to be tested and judged, but they operate strictly within a constrained, simulated environment where the physics, consequences, and informational recording of their deeds are managed entirely by the Sustainer. The divine challenge to “do whatever you want” serves as an affirmation of free will, but the recording of those actions into the fabric of space-time is inescapable.
10. Thematic Epilogue: Tasbih as the Cosmic Liturgy
When one sheds the illusion of autonomous material determinism and adopts the lens of Al-Ghazalian occasionalism, the universe is fundamentally transformed. It ceases to be a cold, dead vacuum of colliding rocks and blind genetics. Instead, the cosmos is revealed to be fiercely alive, a continuously sustained projection of divine power, mercy, and artistry.
The Glorious Quran states:
يُسَبِّحُ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۖ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ ۖ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
“Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is exalting Allah. To Him belongs dominion, and to Him belongs [all] praise, and He is over all things competent.” (Quran 64:1)
This glorification (Tasbih) is not a poetic metaphor; it is the ontological baseline of reality. The exactitude of the strong nuclear force, the bioluminescent beauty of a firefly, the intricate double-helix of DNA, and the thermodynamic dance of two trillion galaxies are all forms of involuntary worship. To exist as a creature is to be a passive vessel for the manifestation of the Creator’s attributes. The universe is a dual-system of glorification: the background hum of the atoms provides the involuntary rhythm, while the human voice provides the voluntary melody.
The Allah of the Quran is indeed the Ever-Present God. He is the Al-Qayyum who actively holds the electrons in their shells, the Al-Bari’ who directs the adaptation of the genome across nine million species, and the Al-Khabir who listens to the silent anxieties of eight billion hearts simultaneously. Through the synthesis of modern quantum physics, information theory, and classical Ash’arite theology, Al-Ghazali’s occasionalism stands not as an archaic medieval theory, but as the most scientifically compatible, logically rigorous, and spiritually profound explanation of reality available to the modern intellect. In an Inshallah universe, every breath is a miracle, every moment is a novel creation, and every human choice remains a localized, deeply responsible participation in a cosmic symphony authored exclusively by the Divine.
