Abstract

Surah al-Mulk is a compact theology of reality. Its thirty verses begin with God’s absolute sovereignty, the creation of death and life as a moral trial, and the ordered beauty of the heavens; they end with an elemental question: if our water were to sink beyond reach, who could restore flowing water? Between those poles, the surah moves repeatedly from the cosmic to the intimate, from the visible to the hidden, and from present providence to future resurrection. The God who holds the kingdom in His hand also knows what breasts conceal (vv. 13–14), makes the earth traversable and provides its nourishment (v. 15), holds birds aloft under the name al-Raḥmān (v. 19), grants hearing, sight, and hearts (v. 23), disperses humanity through the earth and promises to gather it again (v. 24), and finally confronts it with its dependence on accessible water (v. 30). The surah’s scientific significance lies not in encoding technical theories but in directing disciplined attention toward an intelligible, life-permitting, and precariously sustained world. Philosophically, it joins empirical observation to rational and moral inference, rebuking those who neither listen nor reason. Theologically, it presents providence and judgment as two aspects of one sovereignty: life’s gifts make gratitude possible, freedom makes testing meaningful, revelation makes accountability just, and the first creation makes the promised new creation intelligible. Classical commentators—especially al-Ṭabarī, al-Rāzī, al-Qurṭubī, and Ibn Kathīr—supply the linguistic, rational, and transmitted foundations; contemporary commentators deepen the surah’s coherence and existential force.
