Abstract
This treatise offers an extended, treatise-length commentary on a single verse of the Glorious Qurʾān — Sūrat al-Aḥqāf 46:33 — which the classical tradition regarded as the most economical and complete statement of the Qurʾān’s master argument for the Hereafter: the a fortiori inference (qiyās al-awlā) from the First Creation to the Second. The verse reads: “Do they not see that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth and was not wearied (wa lam yaʿya) by their creation, has the power to give life to the dead? Yes, indeed, He has power over all things.” After presenting the Arabic text with transliteration and six named parallel English translations (Sahih International, Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Marmaduke Pickthall, Muhammad Asad, A. J. Arberry, and — as a marked sixth rendering — Maulana Muhammad Ali), the study reconstructs the reception of the verse in five classical mufassirūn: al-Ṭabarī, al-Zamakhsharī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, al-Qurṭubī, and Ibn Kathīr, with particular attention to the meaning of lam yaʿya and to al-Rāzī’s kalām treatment. I. The Text

Transliteration:
A-wa-lam yaraw anna Allāha alladhī khalaqa al-samāwāti wa-l-arḍa wa-lam yaʿya bi-khalqihinna bi-qādirin ʿalā an yuḥyiya al-mawtā; balā innahu ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr.
The verse falls in the late-Meccan Sūrat al-Aḥqāf (“The Sand-Dunes,” chapter 46), among its closing verses (46:33–35), which are addressed to those who deemed the resurrection of decayed bodies impossible. In twenty-six Arabic words it deploys cosmology, theology, and rigorous logic.

The six renderings converge on the semantic core while illuminating its nuances. Note in particular the treatment of wa lam yaʿya: Sahih International’s “did not fail,” Yusuf Ali and Pickthall’s “wearied,” Asad’s “wearied,” Arberry’s “not being wearied,” and Maulana Muhammad Ali’s “not tired.” As we shall see, this double sense — neither fatigued nor incapacitated — is precisely what the classical philologists found in the root.
III. The Classical Commentary (Tafsīr)
The word lam yaʿya and its twin in 50:15
The pivotal phrase wa lam yaʿya bi-khalqihinna derives from the Arabic root ʿ-y-y (عيي). The lexicographer al-Rāghib al-Aṣfahānī, in his Mufradāt, defines al-iʿyāʾ as the exhaustion that befalls the body from exertion, and al-ʿiyy as the incapacity one meets in undertaking a matter — and he expressly pairs the two Qurʾānic occurrences of the root: a-fa-ʿayīnā bi-l-khalq al-awwal (“Were We then wearied by the first creation?”, 50:15) and wa lam yaʿya bi-khalqihinna (46:33). The phrase therefore carries a double charge: God was neither fatigued (lam yatʿab) nor rendered incapable (lam yaʿjaz) by the making of the heavens and the earth. The commentators uniformly recognized that 46:33 stands as the affirmative answer to the rhetorical, denial-expecting question of 50:15 — a point later exegetes such as al-Ālūsī and al-Qāsimī make explicit, citing 46:33 as the proof-text (yadullu ʿalayhi) for the meaning of Sūrat Qāf.
This is also the verse that quietly corrects the anthropomorphism of the Genesis narrative, in which God “rested on the seventh day.” The Qurʾān is emphatic elsewhere: “And We created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six days, and no weariness (lughūb) touched Us” (50:38). al-Ṭabarī (d. 923)
In his Jāmiʿ al-bayān, the doyen of the mufassirūn glosses the verse as concerning God “Who created the seven heavens and the earth, originating them out of nothing (fa-btadaʿahunna min ghayr shayʾ), and was not incapacitated by bringing them into being” — so that He is surely able to revive the dead and bring them from their graves alive as they were before. On the closing refrain he writes that God is a possessor of power “whom nothing He wills can defeat, and nothing He wills to do can weary Him,” adding the striking theological principle: “whoever is incapable of that is weak, and one who is weak regarding what he wills is not fit to be a god.” Al-Ṭabarī ties “they” back to the resurrection-deniers earlier in the sūra, and notes the variant reading qādir without the bāʾ in the codex of Ibn Masʿūd.
al-Zamakhsharī (d. 1144)
The great Muʿtazilite grammarian-exegete, in al-Kashshāf, glosses lam yaʿya bi-khalqihinna as “did not tire and was not incapacitated” (lam yatʿab wa lam yaʿjaz), and draws out the theological implication that God’s power is intrinsic and necessary (qudratuhu wājiba), neither diminishing nor being interrupted by the act of creation “unto all eternity.” On the grammar of bi-qādir, he reflects the shared analysis of the grammarians that the particle bāʾ is added for emphasis (zāʾida li-l-tawkīd), because the sentence carries the force of a negative interrogative — a-laysa Allāhu bi-qādir, “Is God not able…?”
Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 1209)
It is al-Rāzī, “Sultan of the Theologians,” who gives the verse its fullest philosophical treatment in Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb. He reads 46:33 as a paradigm case of qiyās al-awlā — reasoning a fortiori from the greater to the lesser: the One who created the vastly greater thing (the heavens and the earth) is, all the more certainly, able to accomplish the lesser thing (reviving a dead human body). He judged this mode of argument to be “in the utmost soundness and strength, and no rational person doubts it at all,” connecting it to the parallel proof-text, “The creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind” (40:57). Crucially, al-Rāzī grounds the guarantee of the resurrection in the conjunction of two divine attributes: perfect power (qudra), which “lam yaʿya” affirms by negating incapacity, and comprehensive knowledge (ʿilm) of the scattered particles, which secures the reassembly of the dispersed body (the problem of iʿādat al-maʿdūm, the restoration of what has passed away). Lacking neither power nor knowledge, God cannot fail to resurrect. It is worth noting, as an aside on al-Rāzī’s cosmological imagination, that he was among the earliest to entertain the possibility of multiple worlds, arguing that God “has the power to create a thousand thousand worlds (alfa alfi ʿawālim) beyond this world” — a point to which we shall return. al-Qurṭubī (d. 1273)
In al-Jāmiʿ li-aḥkām al-Qurʾān, al-Qurṭubī notes that “seeing” here means “knowing” (al-ruʾya hunā bi-maʿnā al-ʿilm), and glosses lam yaʿya as “He was not incapable or too weak to originate them” (yaʿjaz wa yaḍʿuf ʿan ibdāʿihinna). He canvasses the grammatical debate over the bāʾ in bi-qādir, citing both the view of Abū ʿUbayda and al-Akhfash (that it is pleonastic for emphasis, like kafā bi-llāhi shahīdā) and that of al-Kisāʾī, al-Farrāʾ, and al-Zajjāj (that it stands in for the interrogative-negative sense), with the estimated reading a-laysa Allāhu bi-qādir, parallel to 36:81. He expressly labels the phrase an “argument against the deniers of resurrection” (iḥtijāj ʿalā munkirī al-baʿth).
Ibn Kathīr (d. 1373)
Ibn Kathīr, in his Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿAẓīm, identifies the addressees as “these deniers of the resurrection … who deem the standing-up of bodies on the Day of Return far-fetched,” and glosses lam yaʿya bi-khalqihinna as “their creation did not burden Him” (lam yakrithhu khalquhunna) — rather He said to them “Be!” and they were, without resistance. He cross-references the same verse al-Rāzī cites: “The creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most people do not know” (40:57). His phrase “did not weigh Him down” mirrors the Throne Verse’s assurance that God “feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving” the heavens and the earth (2:255) — the same theology of the untiring Creator.
The consensus of the tradition, then, is unanimous and clear: 46:33 is the capstone of the Qurʾān’s argument against those who deny the Hereafter, built upon the demonstrated omnipotence of the One who created the cosmos without fatigue and without failure.
IV. A Strong Case for God the Creator: The Fine-Tuning of the Universe
The verse invites us to “see” (a-wa-lam yaraw) — to look at the creation of the heavens and the earth as evidence. In our own age, the empirical content of “the heavens and the earth” has expanded almost beyond comprehension, and it has done so in a direction that the intellectually honest observer finds difficult to reconcile with blind chance. The universe appears, in the memorable phrase, rigged for life. Across every domain of physics, the fundamental constants of nature fall within breathtakingly narrow life-permitting ranges. This is the fine-tuning of the universe, and it constitutes, in my judgment, the most formidable contemporary argument for a transcendent, intelligent Creator — an argument that grows stronger, not weaker, with every advance in physics. thequranthequran
Let me state the framing carefully, for it distinguishes this project from the concordism of Maurice Bucaille and the “scientific miracles” apologetics of Zakir Naik. I do not claim that the Qurʾān predicted the cosmological constant, nor that physics proves the God of Islam. Such concordism elevates whatever science currently agrees with a literal reading and demotes whatever does not, producing a brittle theology that must be renegotiated with every textbook revision. My claim is more modest and, I think, more durable: that the fine-tuning of the cosmos is a resonance — an anticipation, a consonance — with the Qurʾān’s insistence that the heavens were “raised” and that God “imposed the balance” (al-mīzān, 55:7), that “you see no fault in the creation of the Most Merciful” (67:3). Science and scripture, on this reading, are two of what may be called the Four Books of God — Revelation, Nature, Destiny, and Deeds — and where they touch, they illuminate rather than prove one another. thequran
The empirical scale of “the heavens”
When the Qurʾān says “the heavens and the earth,” the seventh-century listener could scarcely have imagined the magnitude at stake. The observable universe is roughly 93 billion light-years across and contains, by the most rigorous peer-reviewed estimate available, at least two trillion galaxies — the figure established by Christopher Conselice and colleagues in “The Evolution of Galaxy Number Density at z < 8 and Its Implications” (The Astrophysical Journal, 2016), which concluded that there are “at least 2 × 10¹² (two trillion) galaxies in the currently visible universe, the vast majority of which cannot be observed” — about ten times prior estimates, with roughly 90 % too faint to see. Each galaxy holds, on average, hundreds of billions of stars. That this immensity should have condensed from a singular hot dense state some 13.8 billion years ago, in an event we call the Big Bang, is itself a “First Creation” of staggering proportions — and it is precisely this that 46:33 asks us to contemplate.
The evidence on a knife-edge
Consider the ledger of fine-tuning, drawn from our most successful physical theories:
The cosmological constant. The vacuum energy density Λ is fine-tuned to roughly one part in 10¹²⁰. Quantum field theory predicts a value some 120 orders of magnitude larger than what is observed; as the standard graduate textbook of Hobson, Efstathiou, and Lasenby (General Relativity: An Introduction for Physicists, 2006) puts it, “this gives an answer about 120 orders of magnitude higher than the upper limits… This is probably the worst theoretical prediction in the history of physics!” Steven Weinberg, the Nobel laureate who first placed anthropic bounds on Λ, treated this as genuine fine-tuning; Leonard Susskind conceded that “to make the first 119 decimal places of the vacuum energy zero is most certainly no accident.” Had Λ been slightly larger, the universe would have flown apart before galaxies could condense; slightly negative, and it would have recollapsed. thequranthequran
The initial entropy of the universe. Roger Penrose, using the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy formula, calculated that the probability of the universe beginning in its observed low-entropy state is about one part in 10^(10^123). In his words, “the Creator’s aim must have been [precise] to an accuracy of one part in 10^(10^123).” This number is so vast that, as Penrose notes, one could not write it out in full even by inscribing a “0” on every proton and neutron in the observable universe. Crucially, inflation does not dissolve this problem; as Sean Carroll (himself no theist) concedes, getting inflation to start requires even lower-entropy initial conditions than the conventional Big Bang. thequran + 2
The carbon resonance — Hoyle’s “monkeyed with physics.” In 1953 Fred Hoyle predicted, on the grounds that the universe is full of carbon, that carbon-12 must possess a hitherto-unknown resonance near 7.68 MeV to permit the triple-alpha process by which three helium nuclei fuse into carbon in stellar cores. The Caltech Kellogg Radiation Laboratory group confirmed it: Cook, Fowler, Lauritsen, and Lauritsen (Physical Review, 1957) reported “an excitation energy in C¹² of 7.653 ± 0.008 MeV,” the search having been carried out by the junior physicist Ward Whaling — remarkably close to Hoyle’s prediction. A compounding “coincidence”: oxygen-16 lacks a corresponding resonance that would have converted all the carbon onward to oxygen. Hoyle, a lifelong atheist, was moved to write that “a common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature,” concluding that “the numbers one calculates from the facts seem to me so overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question.” Blogger +2 + 2
The ratio of forces. The ratio of the electromagnetic force to gravity is about 10³⁶ — Martin Rees’s number N. Paul Davies illustrated the precision required for gravity by comparing it to a marksman hitting a one-centimeter target on the far side of the observable universe. Rees, in Just Six Numbers, distilled the cosmos to six such dials — N, the nuclear efficiency ε ≈ 0.007, the density parameter Ω, the cosmological constant λ, the amplitude of density fluctuations Q ≈ 10⁻⁵, and the number of spatial dimensions D = 3 — and observed that “if any one of them were untuned, there would be no stars and no life.” thequranthequran
The nuclear and particle parameters. The strong nuclear force, via ε = 0.007, sits in a razor-thin window: at 0.006, deuterium would not bind and no fusion chain could begin; at 0.008, all hydrogen would have burned in the Big Bang, leaving no water and no long-lived stars. The neutron–proton mass difference of ~1.293 MeV — a mere 0.14 % of the nucleon mass — governs whether a universe of hydrogen and chemistry is even possible. thequranthequran
The fine-structure constant (α ≈ 1/137), which sets the strength of electromagnetism, must lie within tight bounds for stable atoms, stellar nucleosynthesis, and chemistry to exist.
Water’s anomalous properties. Descending from cosmology to chemistry, the humble water molecule is itself a study in fitness. Because of its hydrogen-bonded tetrahedral structure, ice is less dense than liquid water — an anomaly among substances — so that lakes freeze from the top down, insulating aquatic life rather than freezing solid. Water’s high specific heat moderates planetary climate; its polarity makes it the near-universal solvent of biochemistry. The naturalist responses, weighed fairly
The strength of any argument lies in its treatment of the strongest objections. Three deserve a fair hearing.
Brute fact. One may simply declare the constants a brute fact requiring no explanation. But as Richard Swinburne argues, this is an extraordinarily coincidental brute fact, and to prefer it to explanation is to abandon the very principle of sufficient reason on which science itself depends. The demand for explanation does not evaporate merely because an answer is uncomfortable. thequran
Physical necessity. Perhaps a future “theory of everything” will show the constants could not have been otherwise. But the leading candidate, string theory, points the other way: its “landscape” is estimated to admit on the order of 10⁵⁰⁰ possible vacua (the figure popularized from the Douglas–Kachru estimates around 2003–2005, though values in the literature range from roughly 10¹⁰ to well beyond 10⁵⁰⁰), suggesting the constants are radically contingent, not necessary.
The multiverse. The most serious response holds that our universe is one of an immense ensemble with varying constants, and we necessarily find ourselves in a life-permitting one. This deserves respect — it is entertained by serious physicists — but it does not dissolve the design inference. First, as John Leslie’s celebrated firing squad analogy shows, the weak anthropic “we couldn’t observe otherwise” reply is inadequate: if fifty expert marksmen fire and you survive, “I shouldn’t be surprised, since if I’d died I couldn’t notice” is no explanation at all; your survival cries out for one, whether design or a very large number of executions. Second, and decisively, the multiverse-generator itself must be fine-tuned. Robin Collins, Luke Barnes, Paul Davies, and John Polkinghorne have all pressed this point: an inflationary multiverse requires precisely calibrated meta-laws — an inflaton field, a mechanism for varying constants, an over-arching physics — to produce the right kind of diversity. The problem is relocated, not solved. I have elsewhere called this the “turtle-stacking” problem: who fine-tuned the fine-tuner? Even a multiverse, in short, requires a finely-tuned universe-generating system, which is exactly what a designing intelligence would produce. Davies put the matter with characteristic honesty: to invoke “an infinity of unseen universes to explain the unusual features of the one we do see” is scarcely more economical than to invoke “an unseen Creator.” thequran + 2
The weight of testimony
The remarkable feature of this debate is how many of its most eloquent witnesses are not theologians but physicists who drew no easy religious conclusions. Freeman Dyson wrote that “the more I examine the universe and study the details of its architecture, the more evidence I find that the universe in some sense must have known that we were coming.” Paul Davies: “The impression of design is overwhelming.” Stephen Hawking, no friend of theism, acknowledged in A Brief History of Time that “the remarkable fact is that the values of these numbers seem to have been very finely adjusted to make possible the development of life.” And there is the deeper mystery that Eugene Wigner named “the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences” — that abstract structures devised by pure mathematicians should turn out, again and again, to be written into the fabric of physical reality, “a wonderful gift which we neither understand nor deserve.” Einstein confessed the same wonder: “the eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility.” Why should the universe be intelligible at all, and intelligible mathematically? On naturalism this is a brute surd; on theism it is precisely what one expects if the cosmos is the work of a rational Mind, and the equations we discover are, in a phrase, the thoughts of God. thequran + 3
The Christian physicist-priest John Polkinghorne concluded that fine-tuning points to “a divine purpose behind this fruitful universe,” while cautioning — rightly, and in the spirit of this essay — that “the theistic conclusion is not logically coercive, but it can claim serious consideration as an intellectually satisfying understanding of what would otherwise be unintelligible good fortune.” That is exactly the register in which the Qurʾān’s a-wa-lam yaraw speaks: not “here is a proof you cannot escape,” but “do you not see?” thequran
The Qurʾānic frame: al-mīzān, Bil-Ḥaqq, and the Inshallah universe
The Qurʾān names this calibrated order al-mīzān, the balance: “And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance” (55:7). It insists the cosmos was made bil-ḥaqq, “with truth,” not in vain (44:38–39; 21:16) — the Bil-Ḥaqq cosmological principle, that creation has a purpose and a rightful structure. And it grounds the reliability of natural law not in the autonomy of matter but in the constancy of the divine habit — sunnat Allāh — which never changes (33:62; 35:43). Here the theology of al-Ghazālī’s occasionalism, recast for our age as the “Inshallah universe,” is illuminating: the laws of physics are not independent causal powers but the faithful, moment-by-moment customs of God, so regular that we can do science, yet never binding upon their Author. On this view, fine-tuning is not the setting of a clockwork that then runs itself, but the ongoing signature of a sustaining Will — the same Will that “was not wearied” and does not rest. thequran
V. From the First Creation to the Second: The Argument for the Afterlife
We arrive now at the logical heart of 46:33. Having established, by the light of “the heavens and the earth,” that a Creator of supreme power and knowledge exists, the verse draws its conclusion with the force of a fortiori logic: is not such a One able to give life to the dead? This is the Qurʾān’s signature argument — qiyās al-awlā, reasoning from the greater to the lesser — and it recurs at least a dozen times. It is, I have argued across my writings, the single most important line of reasoning for the believer to grasp, because it converts the awe of the First Creation directly into the rational expectation of the Second. thequran
The structure of the argument
The form is transparent. The greater feat — creating the entire cosmos of at least two trillion galaxies from nothing — has demonstrably occurred. The lesser feat — reassembling the matter and restoring the consciousness of a single deceased human being — is included a fortiori within that greater power. To grant the first and deny the second is, as al-Ṭabarī said, to make God “weak,” and “one who is weak regarding what he wills is not fit to be a god.” The Qurʾān presses the point relentlessly: thequran

The embryological argument: from a despised drop
The Qurʾān does not rest on cosmology alone. It turns to the reader’s own body. In Sūrat Yā-Sīn — the passage occasioned, the tradition records, by the pagan Ubayy ibn Khalaf (or al-ʿĀṣ ibn Wāʾil) crumbling a rotted bone before the Prophet and scoffing, “Who will give life to these bones when they are decayed?” — the answer comes: “Does man not see that We created him from a drop (nuṭfa)? Yet behold, he is an open adversary! … Say: He will give them life Who produced them the first time” (36:77–79). The being who was himself brought from a single despised drop should be the last to deem re-creation impossible. Sūrat al-Ḥajj develops the same embryological sign: “O mankind, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection — then indeed We created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a clinging clot…” (22:5). The parable of fire from the green tree
Then comes one of the Qurʾān’s most subtle natural signs: “He Who produces for you fire out of the green tree, so that from it you kindle” (36:80). The classical commentators (Ibn ʿAbbās, and after him al-Jalālayn) noted the markh and ʿafār trees of the Ḥijāz, whose green branches, rubbed together, yield fire — a marvel in which water (the sap), wood, and fire coexist, “yet neither does the water extinguish the fire nor the fire ignite the wood.” The One who lodges such opposites in nature — who brings the fire of life from the green and living, and can bring life from the dead and dry — is not to be doubted. The fingertips: identity and information
Sūrat al-Qiyāma sharpens the argument from raw power to precision of identity: “Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? Yes — We are able to proportion (restore) his very fingertips (banān)” (75:3–4). The classical reading saw here God’s power to reconstruct even the smallest bones; but in the light of the nineteenth-century discovery of the absolute uniqueness of the fingerprint, the verse acquires a stunning further resonance. God does not merely promise to reassemble a generic body; He promises to restore the very individual — down to the ridge patterns that are the signature of personal identity. This raises what philosophers call the reassembly problem: how could a person whose atoms have dissolved into soil and been recycled through other organisms be reconstituted? The Qurʾān’s answer is ʿilm — divine knowledge: God is “Knower of every creation” (36:79), with Whom “are the keys of the unseen… not a leaf falls but He knows it” (6:59). Every atom is tracked; every pattern is recorded. Here, as a resonance and not a proof, modern physics offers an intriguing parallel in the principle of the conservation of information — the no-hiding theorem, the Susskind–Hawking resolution of the black-hole information paradox, the holographic principle — all of which converge on the claim that information, once instantiated, is never truly annihilated. That the record of reality is indelible is a physical conjecture that sits, at the very least, comfortably beside the Qurʾānic vision of a God who forgets nothing and can restore everything. thequran
The dead earth revived: resurrection written into the seasons
The Qurʾān repeatedly points to the annual resurrection of the land: “And among His signs is that you see the earth barren, but when We send down rain upon it, it stirs and swells. Indeed, the One Who gives it life is the Giver of life to the dead. He is over all things competent” (41:39). The reawakening of a dead landscape after rain — seeds and dormant life springing to green — is offered not as poetry only but as a seasonal enactment of the very power in question. Sleep as a daily rehearsal of death
As a physician who has spent a career in sleep medicine, I find the Qurʾān’s analogy of sleep and death especially arresting: “Allah takes the souls (yatawaffā al-anfus) at the time of their death, and those that do not die, in their sleep; then He retains those for whom He has decreed death and releases the others for an appointed term” (39:42). The verb tawaffā — “to take in full” — is applied to both sleep and death, differing only in degree. In deep, dreamless non-REM sleep, the sense of self and of time simply lapses; from the sleeper’s own vantage it is as though he ceased to exist — and yet each morning consciousness is restored intact, memory and personality unbroken. If God has instituted a nightly mechanism for suspending and restoring the self, the resurrection is, as Yusuf Ali beautifully put it, “not more wonderful than our daily rising from Sleep, twin-brother to Death.” The Sufi saying attributed to ʿAlī — “people are asleep; when they die, they awake” — reads, on this account, as neuroscientifically literate. thequran
Consciousness, and why materialism strains
The deepest support for the Afterlife, however, comes from the one phenomenon materialism has never explained: consciousness itself. David Chalmers’s “hard problem” — why there is something it is like to be a subject, why physical processes are accompanied by inner experience at all — has resisted every reductive program, as Thomas Nagel argued in Mind and Cosmos. If subjective experience cannot be derived from, or identified with, the mere motion of matter, then the assumption that consciousness must terminate when the brain decays is precisely that — an assumption, not a finding. On the view I favor, the brain may be less the producer of consciousness than its receiver and transducer — as a radio set is tuned to a broadcast it does not generate, so that the destruction of the receiver need not destroy the signal. This is offered as a philosophical model, not a demonstration; but it is at least consonant with the peer-reviewed observation, by Jimo Borjigin’s Michigan group, of a surge of organized gamma-band activity in the brains of dying patients after the withdrawal of life support. Their study, “Surge of neurophysiological coupling and connectivity of gamma oscillations in the dying human brain” (PNAS, 2023, vol. 120, no. 19, e2216268120), reported that in four comatose dying patients “two of the four patients exhibited a rapid and marked surge of gamma power… within the posterior cortical ‘hot zone,’ a region postulated to be critical for conscious processing.” Such “terminal lucidity” proves nothing about the soul; but it unsettles the confident materialist narrative of uniform cortical shutdown, and it coheres with the Islamic concept of the barzakh, the interspace between this life and the next. Quantum physics adds a further register of humility. The demonstrated non-locality of the world — Einstein’s “spooky action at a distance,” confirmed in the Bell-test experiments of Alain Aspect and others — dismantles the tidy billiard-ball localism of classical materialism and reveals a reality far more deeply interconnected than common sense supposes. And extra spatial dimensions, posited by string and M-theory, supply a coherent conceptual space in which the Qurʾānic Paradise “as wide as the heavens and the earth” (3:133) might be dimensionally adjacent rather than spatially remote — recalling the Prophet’s answer, when asked where Hell could be if Paradise fills the heavens and the earth: “Where is the night when the day comes?” These are analogies, offered in the spirit of resonance; but they show that resurrection into a new creation, in a new dimension, is not the affront to reason the skeptic imagines. thequranthequran
The skeptics, answered
It is only fair to let the deniers speak. Stephen Hawking, in his May 2011 interview with Ian Sample in The Guardian, declared: “I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.” But this, as I have often noted, is a faith claim, not a scientific finding: no one has returned from beyond time, space, and matter with contrary data, and a realm defined as lying outside the reach of instruments cannot be refuted or confirmed in the laboratory. The Qurʾān anticipated exactly this posture in its portrait of the ancient materialists, the Dahriyya: “They say, ‘There is nothing but our worldly life; we die and we live, and nothing destroys us but time (al-dahr).’ But of that they have no knowledge; they only conjecture” (45:24). The denial of the Hereafter is itself an unfalsifiable assumption — a leap of faith into nothingness — no more empirically grounded than the affirmation it rejects, and considerably less adequate to the moral structure of experience. For if death is the equal terminus of the tyrant and his victim, the universe is a theatre of unredeemed injustice, and the human sense that we are not created sudā — “aimlessly, without purpose” (75:36; 23:115) — is a cruel illusion. The Afterlife is the postulate that makes the moral cosmos cohere.
VI. Thematic Epilogue: He Has Power Over All Things
We return to where the verse ends: balā innahu ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr — “Yes, indeed, He has power over all things.” This is not, as al-Rāzī and al-Qurṭubī saw, a decorative flourish. It is the logical closure of the argument. Once the omnipotence of the untiring Creator is granted, no act of His — least of all the resurrection — can be impugned as impossible.
The Arabic root of that final word, qadīr, is q-d-r, the root of measure, decree, and power, and it gives the Qurʾān three of its great names of God. Al-Qādir, the One fully able. Al-Qadīr, the One whose power is perfect and inexhaustible — the very inexhaustibility that lam yaʿya declares. And al-Muqtadir, the sovereign Executor whose determination unfailingly prevails. Together they teach that existence is neither abandoned to chance nor imprisoned by necessity, but is held, measured, and continuously bestowed. Every stable law of physics is a sign of God’s faithfulness — the sunnat Allāh of the Inshallah universe; every fine-tuned constant is a token of His wisdom; and every human soul moves within the kingdom of al-Qādir, al-Qadīr, and al-Muqtadir. Seen thus, the three great themes of this commentary are revealed to be one argument. The fine-tuning of the First Creation demonstrates the Creator’s power and wisdom. The a fortiori logic of 46:33 converts that demonstrated power into the reasonable certainty of the Second Creation. And the divine names bind the two together: the God who calibrated the cosmological constant to one part in 10¹²⁰, who lodged the carbon resonance at 7.65 MeV, who fashioned the conscious self from a drop and restores it nightly from the little death of sleep — that God is, by every philosophical, scientific, and theological standard, abundantly able to give life to the dead.
The architecture is symmetrical. Creation is the demonstrated reality; resurrection is its entailed corollary; Paradise is the promised destination. The skeptic protests that resurrection seems impossible. The Qurʾān’s reply, distilled in this single verse, is unanswerable: more impossible than what? More impossible than the spontaneous appearance, from a point of zero size, of a mathematically intelligible, consciousness-bearing cosmos of two trillion galaxies? More impossible than your own daily return from the oblivion of dreamless sleep? The First Creation has happened; the evidence is before our eyes; the Second is its lesser sibling.
We end where the Qurʾān ends the thought — not with a proof that compels, but with an invitation that summons: A-wa-lam yaraw — “Do they not see?” To see the heavens and the earth aright, and to see that their Maker “was not wearied by their creation,” is already to have half-answered the question of the Hereafter. The other half is not argument but life: for the Garden “as vast as the heavens and the earth” is, the very next verse tells us, “prepared for the righteous — who give in prosperity and adversity, who restrain their anger, and who pardon people” (3:133–134). The cosmic vastness of the promise is matched only by the moral specificity of its inheritors.
Balā — innahu ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr. Yes, indeed: He has power over all things.
