Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) tools become increasingly sophisticated, a growing number of modern Quranic commentators are leveraging AI to enhance the study and teaching of the Quran. This article examines how contemporary scholars are using AI to augment Quranic exegesis—rapidly synthesizing interdisciplinary knowledge, analyzing linguistic patterns, and democratizing access to classical interpretations—in contrast to those who adhere strictly to traditional modes of tafsīr (exegesis). We highlight examples of AI-enhanced Quranic commentary, such as the works of Dr. Zia H. Shah MD and other projects employing AI, and identify scholars and institutions at the forefront of this trend. We then explore how various Islamic traditions—Sunni, Shia, Sufi, and Salafi—are engaging with or resisting AI integration. Throughout, a supportive tone is maintained regarding the careful use of AI, emphasizing its benefits for Quranic understanding while underscoring the enduring importance of human scholarship. In conclusion, the article argues that AI can be a powerful complementary tool that empowers Muslim scholars and educators across different schools of thought, so long as it is guided by trained humans who ensure fidelity to Islamic tradition. A closing thematic epilogue reflects on the broader implications of this technological shift for the future of Islamic education and scholarship.
