By Zia H Shah MD
The Quran repeatedly says that Allah is the creator of everything in the earth, the heavens and what is between the two. In the Quran, God clearly separates himself from whatever we know in the universe. So, God of the Quran is transcendent beyond time, space and matter. Any inclusion of pantheism or panentheism in Sufi Islam is a stretch and foreign to the Quran.
To call any part of God’s creation as God is labeled as polytheism or shirk in Islam and is seriously prohibited.
Now, let us examine verses about a close relationship of Allah with universe and humanity. Firstly, His Omnipresence:
The East and the West belong to God. Whichever way you turn, there is the Face of God. Surely Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing. (Al Quran 2:115)
And:
He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six periods, then He settled Himself on the Throne. He knows what enters the earth and what comes out of it, and what comes down from heaven and what goes up into it. And He is with you wheresoever you may be. And Allah sees all that you do. (Al Quran 57:4)
The Quran uses metaphors to tell each human that Allah is very intimately close to each of us:
And when My servants ask you Muhammad about Me, say: ‘I am near. I answer the prayer of the supplicant when he prays to Me. So they should hearken to Me and believe in Me, that they may follow the right way.’ (Al Quran 2:186)
And:
And certainly We created man, and We know what his mind suggests to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein. (Al Quran 50:16)
Putting all these verses together the conclusion is inevitable for a believing Muslim that there are additional dimensions and Allah is not in the three dimensions familiar to us. Therefore, He is in one of the additional dimensions. But, we will not have access to His dimension as the Quran suggests:
Eyes cannot reach Him but He reaches the human consciousness. And He is the Incomprehensible, the All-Aware. (Al Quran 6:103)
The last quoted verse is followed by additional verses that describe how each and every human action is being recorded and the details will be available for accountability in Afterlife. This perhaps requires and adds extra dimensions to our universe:
When the two Recording angels record the deeds of men, one sitting on the right and the other on the left. He utters not a word but there is by him a guardian angel ready to record it. (Al Quran 50:17-18)
Now, a few words about our current understanding of extra dimensions. Current versions of string theory require 10 dimensions total, while an even more hypothetical über-string theory known as M-theory requires 11. But when we look around the universe, we only ever see the usual three spatial dimensions plus the dimension of time.
