Abstract:

Intelligent Design (ID) and the BioLogos perspective represent two distinct approaches to the relationship between science and faith. ID proponents argue that certain features of the universe and living things are best explained by an intelligent cause rather than undirected natural processes en.wikipedia.org. In contrast, BioLogos – a term popularized by geneticist Francis Collins to describe evolutionary creationism or theistic evolution – fully embraces mainstream evolutionary science as the method by which a Creator brought about life biologos.orgequip.org. This article compares and contrasts ID and BioLogos scientifically, philosophically, and theologically. Scientifically, we examine how ID challenges evolutionary theory and methodology, whereas BioLogos upholds evolutionary theory as God’s chosen mechanism pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. Philosophically, we explore implications for naturalism and teleology: ID seeks evidence of explicit design in nature, while BioLogos emphasizes a divinely ordained natural order without invoking supernatural gaps biologos.org biologos.org. Theologically, we consider each view’s compatibility with Abrahamic faiths, noting that BioLogos offers a more harmonious integration of faith with scientific integrity across Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions equip.org. Through a critical yet fair analysis, this article finds that the BioLogos approach – which affirms both God’s creative sovereignty and the robust findings of science – provides a more fruitful framework for dialogue between science and faith.
