Abstract:
This article explores the historical development of the Kaaba and the rituals of the Hajj pilgrimage as a continuum of divine signs (āyāt) pointing toward belief in God. It traces the origins of the Kaaba in the era of Prophets Abraham and Ishmael, examining how its foundation and the earliest Hajj rites were established as symbols of pure monotheism. It then discusses the significance of the spring of Zamzam in the survival of Mecca and Hajj traditions. The narrative continues through the Year of the Elephant (circa 570 CE), when the Qur’an’s Surah al-Fīl recounts God’s miraculous protection of the Kaaba from an invading army – an event interpreted as a manifest sign of divine guardianship. The article then analyzes how Prophet Muhammad reformed and restored the Hajj’s monotheistic character, cleansing the Kaaba of idols and re-instituting the Abrahamic rites. Finally, the enduring success of Hajj as a global, peaceful gathering of millions is presented as the fulfillment of ancient prophecy and a living testament to divine guidance. Throughout, references to the Qur’an (notably Surah al-Ḥajj and Surah al-Fīl) and Sunni theological insights highlight how each stage in this history is tied to the Quranic concept of God’s guidance and signs for humanity.
