Introduction

Nizari Ismaili Islam is a major branch of Shi’a Islam, tracing its lineage through Imam Isma‘il ibn Ja‘far and his descendants. Nizari theology is rooted in Shi‘i principles but distinguished by a strong emphasis on the Imamat – the institution of the Imam – and on esoteric interpretation (ta’wīl) of scripture. The community’s belief system centers on the absolute unity and transcendence of God (tawḥīd), the finality of Prophet Muhammad’s message, and the continuation of divine guidance through the line of Imams.
