Epigraph
Allah takes away the souls of human beings at the time of their death; and of those also that are not yet dead, during their sleep. And then He retains those against which He has decreed death, and sends back the others till an appointed term. In that surely are Signs for a people who reflect. (Al Quran 39:42)
And among His Signs is your sleep by night and day, and your seeking of His bounty. In that surely are Signs for a people who hear. (Al Quran 30:23)
The Trumpet will be sounded and–– lo and behold!–– they will rush out to their Lord from their graves. They will say, ‘Alas for us! Who has resurrected us from our sleep?’ They will be told, ‘This is what the Lord of Mercy promised, and the messengers told the truth.’ It was just one single blast and then–– lo and behold!––they were all brought before Us. ‘Today, no soul will be wronged in the least: you will only be repaid for your deeds.’ (Al Quran 36:51-54)
The Muslim Times’ Chief Editor’s Soundbite about Afterlife
A simple one liner: The metaphor that the Quran uses for death is that of sleep as apparent from the Quranic verses above.
This soundbite gives us the best understanding about biology and human soul and its relationship with our physical universe.
One of the verses in the epigraph tells us that all the messengers of God have predicted Afterlife. Additionally, the Quran specifically emphasizes it in regards to the prophets of Abrahamic faiths, Abraham himself and Moses that they preached that Afterlife is better and longer lasting than this worldly life. (Al Quran 87:16-19)
The collection below offers a more detailed understanding of Afterlife, its best argument from the Quran and science and how to best understand human soul in a scientific paradigm in relation to sleep:
